ATTYEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B. COLLIN, OF ALTOONA, PENNSYLVANIA.
RAILROAD TURN-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,553, dated May 9, 1882.
Application filed June 27, 1881. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. B.COLLIN, of Altoona, county of Blair, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railroad Turn-Tables; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention consists in the combination, with a turn-table, of alocomotive and a leverarm adapted for attachment to the turn-table, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a turn-table having my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional elevation of the wheel and rail, and Fig. 3 a side elevation of the same.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand my improved method and to carry it practically into effect, I will proceed to describe the same fully, together with the mechanism employed therewith.
A general statement of the method may be made as follows: The methods employed heretofore to revolve railroad turn-tables havebeen either to push them around into the de- .sired position by hand or to revolve the same tached thereto are generally located in a vertical plane instead of a horizontal one, as is usual.
a represents a single supporting and driving wheel, held by proper hearings in line below the center of the boiler, as shown.
a represents a rail extending around the pit of the table, upon which the driving-wheel of the locomotive runs.
B represents the turn-table proper, and b an arm or lever extending from the center of the same, the outer end of which is strongly so cured to thelocomotive in an y suitable manner.
The operation will be readily understood. When it is desired to revolve the table steam is admitted into the cylinders of the locomotive in the usual manner, and the same is caused to travel upon the rail and carry with it by means of the arm orlever b the turn-table B until the latter has reached its proper position.
The advantages resulting from the employment of this invention are very great.
The locomotive, being attached to the turntable and having a singledriving-wheel, readily adapts itself to the varying positions of the table as the latter is moved by the weight of the locomotive upon it.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with a turn-table, a locomotive, substantially as desired, and a lever-arm adapted for attachment to the turn-table, substantially as described.
This specification signed and witnessed this 25th day of June, 1881.
JOHN B. COLLIN.
