UNITED STATES PATENT GEETCE.
JAMES COLLINGE, OE I'IILL PLACE, ENGLAND.
LAM P-CHIMNEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 589,416, dated September 7, 1897. Application filed October 6, 1896. Serial No. 608,021. (No model.) Patented in England November 27,1895, No. 22,731.
To all whom it may concer/z:
Be it known that I, JAMES COLLING, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of Hill Place, in the countyof Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp Chimneys, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates `to lamp-chimneys; and the object thereof is to provide an improved combination lamp-chimney and relector, a further object being to provide a device of this class in which the danger of overheating the chimney or the transparent portion thereof is reduced to a minimum and the danger of breakage also largely obviated.
The invention is the same for which Letters Patent were granted to me in Great Britain on the 27th day of N ovember,1895,No.22,7 3l, and is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, said drawing being a central vertical section of my improved lamp-chimney and reflector.
In the practice of my invention I provide a combination lamp chimney and reiiector Vwhich consists of two separate and detachable parts, the first or main part A being cu pshaped in form, the larger end thereof being directed upwardly, and the smaller end is provided with a tubular portion 13,' which is adapted to be conected with a lamp-burner in the usual manner. The second or supplemental part consists of a conical reflector C, which is placed upon the upper open end of the rst or main part and the base of which is directed upwardly and outwardly and provided with an annular flat rim D, and the apex thereof, which is directed inwardly and downwardly, is provided with a large central opening E, to which is secured a vertical tube A or pipe E, which is open at the upper end.
The conical portion C, the annular flat rim D, secured to the base thereof, and the tube or pipe F may all be formed integrally, or said parts may be formed separately and be connected in any desired manner, and the under side of the annular rim D is also provided with a reflecting-surface.
The tube or pipe serves as an escape-flue for the products of combustion, and the reiiecti'ng-surface of the conical part C of the second or supplemental part of the chimney is designed to properly reflect the light which would otherwise pass upwardly, and a part thereof is again reflected by the annular rim tube or pipe F, while the size of the upper part of the transparent portion A is such as to also reduce the probability of overheating the same.
Having fully described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters' Patent-` c A combined lamp-chimney and reilector, consisting of a main base or body portion,
which is cup-shaped or conical in form, and
the apex of which is directed downwardly, and provided with a neck whereby it is adapted to be mounted on or connected with a burner, and a supplemental part or portion which is mounted thereon, and which consists of a conical attachment, the base of which is directed upwardly and outwardly, andprovided with anannular rim whichrests on the top of the main base or body portion of the chimney, and extends beyond the same, and is provided with a reflecting-surface on its under side, and the apex of the conical attachment which is directed downwardly within the main base or body portion of-the chimney being provided with a central openin g around which is formed or secured an upwardly-directed tube which forms a part of the chimney, the inner or lower surface of the conical portion of the attachment being provided with a reflecting-surface, and the main or base portion of the chimney being composed of transparent material, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 22d day of September, 1896.
JAMES COLLINGE. lVitnesses:
SAMUEL GonDAEn, Mosns LUTEUER.
