PRINTING DEVIGE. N0. 588,85? Pcei1tedAug. 24,1897.
UNITED* STATES PATENT OFFICE ROBERT J BENTLEY AND GEORGE H. SOHIEK, OF J OLIET, ILLINOIS.
PRINTING DEVISE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 588,853, date i August 24, 1897. Applicatlon filed April Z0, 1896. Serial N0. 588,225. (N0 model.)
T0 all wh0m zit may concern:
Be i1: known that we, ROBERT J. BENTLEY '3nd GEORGE H. SCHIEK, oitizens of theUuited States of America, residing ab J olieb, in the oounty of Will and State of llli nois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automatio Printing Apparatus, of which the following is a specifioation, reference being had therein 110 the aocompanying drawings, and the letters of reference thereou, forming a part of tl1is specifioation, in whioh Figure 1 is a side elevanion of the apparabus, und Fig. 2 a front eleva'oion of the same.
This invention relat6s to oertaixl improvements in automatio printing apparatus clesigned espeeially 130 be combined and usec1 in conj unction With stands or fram es Whioh support rolls of paper, such as is oommonly uSed by dealers in merohandise for wrapping purposes, for automatieally printing upon Lhe paper such wording o1 characters as may be desired as i is drawn from the roll; and it cousists in certain novel construotion und arrangement of parts, which 2we fully set forth and described in thefollowing speoifieation and pointed out in the claims.
Roferring to 'he drawings, A represents the base, B the eross-heacl, an'd C O th'e roll-.
supporting posts of a frame such asis commonly used by dealers f01 standing upon 1.heir
counters fo1 supporting 1olls of wmpping-paper, as shown ab P, und. whioh fr2une is provided with he usual spring-arms D for holding the usual -blade E, whioh elainps aud holds the free end of the paper strip and also serves as a shear against which the paper is brough 110 sever its fromfnhe roll-strip after a portion l1as been drawn from the roll, and as a, means of supportiug the paper-roll in said frame a rod is plaoed through its core, or it2s oore maybe providerl With trunnions, as represented als I. Fixed to said cross-head B is a pair of spring-ums F, shaped so as to extend outward and downward oo a point about horizontal with the axis of roll P, and eaoh of said arms is provided Wibh a sta-y-bar G, placed at'the chord of their aroh, for bl1e purpose of preventing their portion at said auch fron1 yielding and. thereby confining their yielding to tha portion between said arch 1 und oross-head B. Said arn1s F are each provided ab tl1eir lower terx'ninal With an eye H sind above.said eye with keeper-hooks H and H in sucoessive order, as shown.
R is a roll, preferably made of wood, having trunnions J plaeed in said arm-eyes H, arid, further, said rollis provided about either end Wi'h rubber bands L und. is yieldingly hold by said arms F, so a s to bring said bands L0 bear against the roll of paper P with sufficient pressure, so thab when roll P is turned provided Wll1ll trunuions J and J, pluoed,'
respeotively, in tl1e keeper-hooks I-I and H of arms F 2u'1d yieldingly hold. so roll R Will impinge roll R anal so roll R Will in turn in1pinge roll R by means of coil-springs S and S, whioh respectively oonneot the trumnions J of roll R With the lower extremiy of arn1s F aud also conneot togetller he trumnions of both side rolls R and R, a-s shown. The 1'011 R being for the purpose of primarily receiving the printing-ink, when by the join rotation of all the rolls, caused loy their yielding faoe-conaot, the\ iuk is taken 011 roll R frofn roll R aud given out to ink the type W 0n roll R, as the said type is brought about1 in contaol: therewith, so oho type will be supplied ab each turn with ink to print upon oho paper St-1ip o1 roll P such matter or character as may be desired by the dealer, and by reason of roll R being of less diameter than roll R the type WV will not engage saicl roll R sucoessively in the same place, auf]. henee a uniform distribution of ink is made. The arms F are made with a yielding capaoiuy sufficient 150 aooommodate roll R to various diameters of the roll of paper P. The form of said spring-ums F are such that when the paper-roll P ehanges loy cousumption from a large 130 a small size the printing-roll will be brought by the tension of said spring-arms toward the axis of fihe paper-rol], and by reason 0f the curved. forma of said spring-arms, the fach 0f their being seeured so the paper-rol] holding the frame the paper-rol], and therefore the apparatus is adapted 130 properly print the paper as it is drawn from the roll from the greatest to the sma1lest diameter of the paper-roll.
The form of frame for supporting the roll 0f paper P may be changed to any convenienl: type from that; shown, the manner of attachxnent and design of the yielding arms F may be altered, and the type of springs used f01 yieldingly holding said r011s R, R, and R together may be changed and no affect the nature of this invention.
Having th us described our invention, what we clairn as new and useful, and desire to seeu1e by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. In eombina'oion wit-h a frame supporting a rotatable paper-roll, of a pair of curved spring-arrns provided with vertically-disposed chords and having eyes formed Lherein continuous Wih the said parts ab their points 0f juncnure, a printing-roll rotatably earried in said eyes and having frictiona] bands there- 0n to conuacb Wih the paper-roll and also pro- Vided witl1 type standing 01111 equally With the said bands, successively-arranged honks 011 1311e said arms, ink-rolls rotatably carried by Ehe said hooks, and springs engaging the trunnions of said ink-rolls and ul1e said arms.
substantially as described.
2. In combination With a supporting-frame having a paper-roll journaled. therein and a, cut-ter eoactin g with said. paper-roll, of a pair of curved spring-arms having vertically-disposed ehords, a diametrically-opemting typeroller carried by the lower portions of said spring-arm's ab Ehe point of' juncture With the ehords, and successive inking-rollers yieldingly engaging the said type-roller, said'typeroller being he1d con-t-inuously in 1ine with the axis of the paper-rol], substantially as described.
3. The combination With a supportingframe having a paper-roll therein and a entting attachmenb coacting With the said paperroll, of a pair of conuinuous curved springarnris having their lower ends in'line With the axis of the paperroll and provided with chords, a type-roll carried a1: the lower portions of the said arms and situated in 1ine with the axis of the paper-xoll, and successive inking-rolls bearing against eaoh other and one of the same again'st the said type-roll, said type-roll and inking-rolls beingi n curved alinemen, and the pressu1e 0f each 0n the other exerted direotly in 1ine Wibh the axis 0f lhe paper-roll, subsbantially as described.
