` UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN ERNEST KENNEDY, 0F MONTREAL, CANADA.
SHOE.
SPECIFICATION-formng part of Letters Patent No. 588,769, dated August 24, 1897. Application tiled November 27, 1896. .Serial No. 613,563. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JOHN ERNEST KENNEDY,
a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing in the city and district of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec', Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to Which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a novel method of attaching a sole of india-rubber and the like to the lasted upper of a boot or shoe; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of an outer sole constructed acf cording to this invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the upper of my shoe, lasted and held temporarily in position by'a cement securing edge of the upper to the insole. Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the soles.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A is an insole, preferably of woven or matted material, impregnated or coated on its outer side With india-rubber, but may be of any material to which an adhesive can be applied.
B is the edge of the shoe-upper, previously drawn into position over a thin coat of cement or of tissue impregnated With cement (and laid between the edges of the upper and the insole) and held there by stitches across the sole till cement has been set, under pressure, by heat, evaporation, dto.
C is a series of perforations through the leather of the' upper (near its edge) either in one or more rows and exposing the outer surface of theinsole through these perforations.
D is the outer edge of the outsole, which is molded from rubber or other flexible composition.
E is an elevated portion of` the outsole designed to take the place of ordinary filling between the outer sole and the insole. This elevated portion is of about even height with the thickness of the upper leather and is cemented or solidified onto the insole by vulcanizing or by any other approved method. F is a series of projecting teeth set in a concaved groove F and formed on the outsole .in
the molding, cemented, vulcanized, or other- Wise secured onto the outsole after it has been molded and adjusted so as to lit into the perforations C through the upper and come in contact with the insole or similar perforations in the insole or through a strip of material attached thereto, to which they are vulcanized, cemented, riveted, Welded, or secured in any. other approved manner. These teeth when made fast to the insole act as a stitch, and, by means of the concaved groove F', are held in compression While vulcanizing or otherWise attaching the teeth to the insole, and draw the shoulder G tightly against the upper and bind it there.
The insole A is made of asbestos, felt, cotton, Wool, or other suitable material, impregnated or coated on its lower or outer surface With india-rubber or other like composition and cemented or vulcanized onto the elevated portion E of the outsole.
The combination, with an upper provided With a series of holes around its edges, of an insole arranged above the said edges, and an outer sole of india-rubber provided With a portion E projecting into the space between the edges of the upper and secured to the insole, and having a series of concave recesses F" and teeth F projecting from the said recesses and engaging wi th the said lholes in the upper, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN ERNEST KENNEDY.
Witnesses:
