UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE WV. BIERER, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO JOHN R. BOWERS, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
APPARATUS FOR POURING MOLTEN IRON OR STEEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,549, dated August 24, 1897.
Application fil d December 2,1896. Serial No. 614,240. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BIERER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Pouring or Teeming Molten Iron, Steel, or other Metal from Crucible-Pots; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invent-ion, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a device or apparatus for pouring or teeming molten iron, steel, or other-metals from crucible-pots;'and it consists of a carriage provided with liftingtongs, together with certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
-In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 is a perspective View of my rotary teeming-carriage,which is constructed in accordance with.v
my invention, showing the same in the act of pouring the contents into a ladle. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the tongs and means for permitting the same to be rotated. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the lid and disk.
To put my invention into practice, I provide an axle B and fit the same with a pair of wheels of a suitable size. Mounted upon this axle B is a box-shaped frame 0, having a removable side or door, which is attached and held in position by means of bolts '5 and provided with a circular opening I), through which the tongs operate. Arranged Within the box 0 is a circular disk or bearing (2, hav ing an oblong slot f, in which the tongs J are mounted and secured therein by a pin h. This disk or bearing 6 is mounted upon friction-rollers g, secured in bearings formed in front and rear of the box in a manner that will admit of the disk e revolving freely.
The lifting-tongs consist of a bent portion 7a, adapted to fit about the crucible l and project some distance from thefront of the box (3, and long handles J ,which extend from the rear face of said box. These tongs J are pivoted in the opening f and are capable of being made to occupy any position necessary tothe lifting and pouring of crucibles Z into ladles-0.
In operation the crucibles Z are emptied of their contents into large ladles o, carried by a suitable car or truck m, which runs upon a track 10 about the mill, as the present method of pouring or teeming the said crucibles is very diflicult and laborious. It is also very hot, sometimes scorching and burning the workmen. By my method and apparatus the operator will take hold of the handles J of the tongs, grasp the pot and elevate the same to the desired height, then convey it upon the carriage to the ladle'o, and pour or teem the contents into the same with very little labor and be away from the intense heat of the molten metal and pot.
This apparatus, constructed asdescribed,
Willenable a Workman to quickly lift and teem a crucible of several hundred pounds in Weight unaided and with but little manual labor. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described apparatus for teeming or pouring out the molten contents of crucibles, consisting of an axle mounted upon wheels, a box-shaped frame attached to the axle, a rotary disk or bearing within said frame, friction-rollers carrying said disk,-and suitably-constructed tongs, pivoted in said disk whereby the same may be movedin any desired direction, all arranged and combined for service as hereinbefore specified and set forth.
GEORGE 'w. BIERER.
