ERNST AXTHELM, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
'SHUTTER-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,37 5, dated August 17, 1897.
Application filed May 26,1897.
To all whom it may concern; I
Be it known that I, ERNST AXTHELM, aciti'- zen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county'of VAllegheny'and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Shutter- Fasteners, of which the following is arspeciiication, reference being had rtherein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in shutter -fasteners, and has forV its object Yto construct a fastener for this purpose that will be extremely simple in its construction, strong, durable, and effectual in the'performance of'all its functions.
Briefly described the invention consists ofv a plate which is countersunk in the shutterrail, so as to bring the face of the same flush with the face of the shutter, said plate being provided with a depressed portion, which forms a catch to operate the shutter and also forms a bracket from which the gravity-catch is suspended, said gravity-catch protruding through the plate and adapted to engage in a socket provided therefor in the Window-sill; and to this end the invention consistsr in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement fparts to beherein after more specically described, and particularly pointed out in theclaim.
In-de'scribing lthe invention in detail reference ishad to the accompanying drawings, formingapartfof this speciicatiomand Wherein like letters of reference indicate vsimilar parts throughout the several views,in which- Figure l-is'a sideelevation of a portion of a.building, showing my improved fastener in position. Fig. 2 is a front View of Vthe fastener.` AFigf is a rear view of the same. Fig. 4 is a side view showing the movement of the gravity-latch in dotted lines. Fig. 5 is a crosssectional View of the fastener and a portion of the window-sill and shutter-rail. Fig. Gis a perspective'lview of the fastener. Fig]v is a perspective viewf of the locking-plate for the gravity-latch. Fig. 8 is a top plan view of the fastener. i
Referring now to the drawings by referprovided with suitable screw-holes?) o, countersunk on the front of the plate, so as to permit the screw-head to be perfectly iiush with Serial No- 638,282. (No model.)
i the*i face of the plate. This plate is also coun- 'tersunk in the shutter-railc, which is pro- I vided with a recess CZ to receive the depressed Aportion c of the plate, the opening f thus formed in the plate serving as a catch to operate the shutter. To the back of this depressed portion e. is secured, by means of a rivet g, a plate h, having a slot h to permit the vertical movement of the plate, said plate having a protruding upper end 7o extending through theslot or opening formed in the plate and forming a inger-catch,' by means 'of which the latchV may be lifted when it is desired to release the same from its engagement. VThis plate h carries a shank l, which operates in akeeper mon the back of the plate a, said shank having formed integral therewith `the catch or l1'o ok mrwhich protrudes through a slot 0 in the plate and is provided with an inclined face n', so as to cause the same to lift the latch when it comes in contact with the plate p, secured in the Window-sill q and provided with a slot p' to receive the said'hook or latch.
The operation of my improved shutter-fastener is as follows: Assuming that all parts have been securedin their respective positions and the fastener attached to the shutter-rail, the shutter being open, as is shown in Fig. l of the drawings, theoperator can close the shutter by inserting the finger in the'opening f without engaging the protruding ca tch 7o, and as the inclined face n of the hook or catch n comes in contact with the plate p the latch will again fall by reason of its oWn Weight and the hook thereof firmly engage the plate p, so as to securely lock the shutter.
When it is desired to unlock and open the shutter, the operator when inserting the finger in the opening f places the same in a manner to engage and lift the catch la, which serves toA raise thejcatch out of its'engagement with the-locking-plate p, and the shutter may be readily forced open. By this construction it will be observed that when the shutter is closed the lock will operate automatically Without any assistance fromthe operator, and it will also be' noted that various changes may be made Ain thev details of construction without departingfrom the general spirit of my invention.
IOO
tegrnl therewith a catch or hook and protruding' through said slot in the base-plate, Said Catch or hook having nn inclined face, and Ineens whereby said fasten er is secu red to the shutters, substantially as shown and described.
in testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
