A. W. LAUGHLIN. CHEGKREIN HOOK.
Patented Aug. 17, 1897.
aZWZaa /zZZ/Z- attainmen UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER W. LAUGHLIN, OF ODESSA, MISSOURI.
CHECKRElN-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,341, dated August 1'7, 1897.
Application filed May 6, 1897. Serial No. 635,330. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be' it known that I, ALEXANDER W. LAUGH- LIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Odessa, in the county of Lafayette and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oheckrein-Hooks; and I do declare. the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to checkreinhooks; and the object is to provide a device of this character which is also adapted for attachment with the crupper-strap,which serves to keep the hook closed and prevent accidental disengagement of the checkrein therewith.
With this object in view the invention consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully. set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my hook closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the hook open. Fig. 3 illustrates one mode of attachment to the harnesssaddle, and Fig. 4 shows another mode of attachment.
In the drawings, 1 denotes a tubular post, the bore of which is screw-threaded and the lower end of which is provided with a supporting base-flange 3, while its upper end is formed with a head 4, having a transverse aperture 5. V
6 denotes the hook proper, the shank of which is swiveled in the head aforesaid and is provided with a transverse loop 8, to which the crupper-strap is adapted to be attached.
In use the crupper-strap is attached to its loopwhen the point of the hook is closed or in the position shown in Fig. 1. \Vhen it is desired to attach the checkrein, the hook is turned round to bring its point free of the tubular post and into the position shown in- Fig. 2, which will permit of the ready attachment of the checkrein.
It will be observed that the act of opening the hook, so that the checkrein may, be attached, twists the crupper-strap, so that when the hook is released the torsional strain or energy of the strap in its endeavor to assume its normal position will swing the hook round in the position shown in Fig. 1, thus closing it about the checkrein. In this position the point rests against the tubular post and it will be impossible for any of the parts of the harness to become entangled with the hook.
The device may be attached to the harnesssaddle in any well known manner, but as shown in Fig. 3 I pass a bolt 9 upwardly through the saddletree and screw the tubular post onto it.
Fig. 4 shows another mode of attaching wherein the bolt is dispensed with, and in lieu thereof I provide a flat disk 10, it being a counterpart of the base-flange 3, the holes corresponding, &c. The layer or upper strip of a spring back pad is riveted between these two disks, thereby completing the mounting.
While these are the preferred means for attaching the device, I would have it distinctly understood that I do not wish to be confined thereto, for other means may be employed without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a checkrein-hook, the combination with a post ofa hook, the shank of which is swiveled to the post, and is provided with a transverse loop which is adapted to be attached to the crupper-strap of the harness, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a post provided with a head, of a checkrein-hook, the shank of which is swiveled in the head, and pro-- vided with a transverse loop, the point of the hook when closed being in a plane below that of the transverse loop, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALEXANDER W. LAUGHLIN.
Witnesses:
J. K. BRoUGHroN, J. 0. MOBURNEY.
