Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER M. DUFFY, OF CORTLAND, NEW YORK.
FEED-WATER PU RlFlER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,323, dated August 17, 1897.
Application filed January 30, 1897. Serial No. 621,282. (No model.)
.be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to steam-boilers, but more particularly to means for purifying the feed-water before it enters the boiler; and it consists, essentially, in a serpentine tube through which the water is caused to flow and a mud-drum communicating with said tube to receive the deposits of the foreign substances contained in the Water, as will be hereinafter more fully explained, and particularly set forth in the claims.
The objects of the invention are to produce a simple and eifective devicefor purifying feed-water and to so construct the same that it can be readily introduced intothe boiler through a proper manhole and be supported upon the boiler tubes. These objects are accomplished by means of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which the figure represents a side view of a boiler, partly,
broken away to show the device in position within the boiler.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates the boiler, which is of-the usual construction, and 2 the tubes therein.
The numeral 3 indicates the serpentine tube, which is preferably composed of a series of U-shaped tube-sections 4, provided with suitable flanges 5, by means of which said sections are bolted together. One of the outer or end sections is provided with an inlet-pipe 6, which leads outside of the boiler and may be connected with a suitable pump to force water through the several sections. The other end section is provided with an outlet 7, throughwhich the water is discharged into the boiler, said'outlet being preferably made with a flaring or bell-shaped mouth, so that the water may flow over its side in a circular sheet. The sections are so constructed that the bottom or curved portion of each section is at a lower level than that of the preits curved portions with a short tube 8, which affords communication with a mud-drum 9, having its inner end closed and its outer end projecting through an end of the boiler and provided with a cut-off Valve 10.
The mud-drum is provided with suitable legs 11, which support the device upon the boiler-tubes. 7
In operation the water flows through the serpentine tube and, becoming heated, the impurities in the Water will be precipitated through the connecting-tubes into the muddrum, from which they may be taken when desired. Owing to the serpentine character of the tube 3 the force of the current of water through the same is gradually diminished, so that all foreign substances contained in the water have a chance to settle in the curved portions of the tube and pass through the connect-ing-tubes into the mud-drum.
. Having thus fully described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a steam-boiler, of a feed-water purifier, situated in a vertical plane within the steam-space of said boiler, comprising a serpentine or sinuous tube having an overflow-opening at its inner end and a communicating mud-drum below, substantially as specifie 2. The combination, with a steam-boiler, of a feed-water purifier/situated within the steam-space of said boiler, said purifier comprising a serpentine or sinuous tube composed of a series of U -shaped sections connected together and having its inner end section provided' with an overflow-opening, and a muddrum communicating with each U-shaped section, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ALEXANDER M. DUFFY.
