UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
IILMER n. wILsoN, or CYNTHIANA, INDIANA.
VscY'rI-Il:v HEELAND FAS-TEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent o. 588,257, dated August 17, 1897.
Application filed September 17, 1896. Serial'No. 606,126. (No model.) I
T all whom it man concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER E. WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cynthiana, in the county of Posey and State of Indiana, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scythe'Heels and Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use .the same. y Y
This invention relates to improvements in a scythe heel and fastener; and it consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accom panyin g drawings, illustrating this invention, Figure 1 is an elevation of the end of the handle and the heel of the blade provided with my improvement, and also showing in dotted lines .the manner in which the blade is removed. Fig. 2 is a cross-sec- Fig. 3 is a crosssection on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to said drawings, 1 indicates the h andleof the scythe, and 2 the blade. The end portion of this blade is provided with an angular portion 3 and a bent ringer 4.. On the end of the handle 1 is a plate 5, secured thereto by screws and by means of a socketpiece fitting over the end of the handle. In this plate 5 and adjacent to the end of the handle is a slot 7, and inthe rear part of the socket-piece is an opening 8. The said slot 7 extends nearly across the face of the plate, and the handle in the rear of this slot is cut away about the width ofV .the slot in the-rear of the slot and tapering toward the opening 8, as shown at 9 in Fig. 2. Y
The outer face of the inner end portion of the plate 5 is roughened or serrated and is provided with an opening 10 therethrough.
which is in alinement with an opening 11 in the handle. Situated within the slot 7 of the plate is a loop 12, which ts nicely within the same and through which the bent end portion 3 of the blade is situ-ated, while said loop is provided witha screwfthr'eaded projection 13, passing through the openings 8 and 9, and provided with-a thumb-screw 14:. The rear face of theiinger 4 of the blade is also roughened or serrated to cause frictional contact with the plate 5. An eye 15, attached to a screw-threaded pin 16, is situated within the opening 10 of said plate and receives the iingere of the blade. The pin 16 extends through the handle and is provided with a thumbscrew 17.
The invention is used in the following manner: As shown in Fig. 1, the members are in place, the tinger of the blade being tightly held against the plate by means of the eye and thumb-screw and the roughened or serrated portions ot' the blade and nger, while the bent end portion 3 is held rigid by the loop and its pin and thumb-screw.
If it is desired to remove the blade, the thumb-screws 14: and 17 are both loosened, it beingnecessary to unscrew the thumb-screw 14 sufficiently to allow the loop to pass out of the slot 7. Thereupon the bent end portion and finger of the scythe can be easily' removed from the loop and eye, thus separating the blade from the handle, The manner of attaching these members together will of,
course be obvious.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a handle having a plate provided with an opening 10, an eyebolt situated within the opening, and athumbscrew on said bolt, there being a slot 'Zin said plate, anda loop situated within said slot having a bolt a-nd thumb-screw, of a blade having a bent end andinger situated within said slot and eyebolt respectively, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a handle, having a plate provided with an opening 10, and a slot 7, said plate being roughened or serrated around said opening 10, an eyebolt within said opening 10provided with a thumb-screw, a loop within said slot having a-projection provided with a thumb-screw, of a blade provided with a bent end situated within said loop, and a iinger situated within said eyebolt, and having a roughened orserrated face, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have -signed this specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. Y
ELMER WILSON.
