UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. Y
JOHNV. JAHN, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
SCISSORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 587,968, dated August 10, 1897.
Application led September 26,1896. Serial No. 607,097. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern.-
Beit known that I, JOHN IV. JAHN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scissors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. A
This invention relates to certain new improvements in scissors, and has for its object to provide within the handle of the scissors a receptacle for the thread and a receptacle for the needles, thus permitting the operator to have these articles at hand ready for use at any time desired.
The invention further aims to construct a scissors combining the above advantages without requiring any alteration of the cutting portion of the same.
A still further object of my invention is to construct the scissors as above described in a manner that will in no way weaken the same or destroy their durability and will be comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view the invention finally consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more specically described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciication, and wherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure I is a detail View of the pin. Fig. 2 is a view showing scissors having needlereceptacles. Fig. 3 is atop view of a portion of the handle.
In the drawings, a represents the `shank of the handle in all three forms shown, and within this shank is provided a receptacle l). In Fig. 2 I have shown the receptacle extend` ing from the outer end into the shank. For this construction I have provided a pin c, adapted to lit in the aperture d, said pin carrying a handle c anda half-flange c2, adapted to engage in the groove d, provided in the 5o handle proper. An aperture f is provided in one of the shanks, said aperture communicating with one of the grooves or slots b, this slot being intended for the thread, the end of which may be passed through the aperture, while the other slot is intended for the needles or what other like'small articles it maybe intended to use it for. By this arrangement the thread may be Wound on an ordinary bobbin and extend through the aperture f, where it will be always ready for use, and when the pins are in their position the scissors may be used without danger of the thread or needles being lost from the same and when required for use will be at hand for same. Y y Y I have shown in the drawings three forms of scissors and the application of my invention to each. It will be apparent that the same may be applied to many other forms of scissors and shears that are now in use.
It will also be noted that various changes may be made throughout the details in construction of the invention as maybe required and as may be found most convenient for the styles of scissors that may be employed Without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is
In a device of the character described, scissors provided with shanks having receptacles formed therein, recesses formed in the handles at one side of the receptacles and in combination therewith pins fttingin the ends of the receptacles, half-anges formed on the pins and adapted to enter the recesses of the handles, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN W. JAI-IN.
