J. MITCHELL. COMBINATION CHAIR 0R STOOL.
No. 587,845. Patented Aug. 10,1897.
INVEN TOR WITNESSES ATTOHNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MITCHELL, OF ALSTON, ENGLAND.
COMBINATION CHAIR OR STOOL.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 587,845, dated August 10, 1897.
Application filed September 30, 1896. Serial No. 607,433 (No model.)
To all 1071,0172 it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN MITCHELL, a subject of the Queen of England, and a resident of Alston, near Stone, in the county of Stafford, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Chair or Stool, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of referenceindicate corresponding parts wherever found throughout the several views.
This invention relates to combination stools or chairs and swings for children; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which may be used when necessary as a high stool or chair and which may be converted into a swing whenever desired.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved combination-chair; Fig. 2, a similar View of the device when used as a swing, and Fig. 3 a cross-sectional view of the seat of the chair and of the parts connected therewith.
In thepractice of my invention I provide a chair which comprises a seat 5, having a back composed of the upright rods 6, which are connected at their tops by a cross-plate 7, and to the outer rods 6 are secured the arms 8, the outer ends of which are connected with the seat and supported by standards 9. The seat 5 is provided in its under surface with a wide groove 10, which is almost as wide as the seat and the sides of which are inwardly directed, as shown at 11, and at or near the front end of which is formed a notch or recess 12, in which is placed or secured a spring 13, the outer end of which is bent downwardly to form a hook 14. I also provide a plate or board 15, which is adapted to slide into the groove 10 and the edges of which are beveled, the connection between said plate or board and the seat being what is known as a tongue-and-groove connection, and the legs 16 are secured to said plate or board 15, and four of said legs are employed in the usual manner, and these legs are connected by cross-rods 17.
, The front ends of the arms 8 of the chair are also connected by a detachable rod or bolt 18, which is designed to hold a child in the chair, and the arms are each provided on their outer sides with two eyes, hooks, or rings 19, and the seat on each side is provided centrally thereof with a hook or other fastening device 20, and in practice I employ a cord or rope 21, which is connected with the hook or other fastening device 20 and passed upwardly through the eyes, hooks, or rings 19 and connected with another cord 22, by which the chair is adapted to be supported and used as a swing, it being understood that the cords or ropes 22 may be connected with the ceiling or other suitable support. I
Whenever it is desired to use the device as a chair, the seat of the chair and the plate or board 15 are connected, as shown in Fig. 1, by sliding the plate or board 15 into the groove 10, and said plate or board is held in said groove by the spring 14, and whenever it is desired to use the device as a swing these parts are disconnected, or, in other words, the plate or board 15, with the legs 16 connected therewith, is detached from the bottom or seat of the chair by raising the spring let and pulling the plate or board out of said groove.
My invention is not limited to the method herein described of connecting the ropes or cords 22 with the arms and seat of the chair, and any desired means may be employed for this purpose; and it is evident that other changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a combination chair and swing comprising a seat, a back consisting of upright rods secured thereto, said seat being provided on the under side thereof with a wide groove having inwardly-directed sides and provided In testimony that I claim the foregoing as i 7 my invention I have signed myname, in pres- 1o ence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 15th day of September, 1896.
