Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICHEL DE ZUR-MHLEN AND ADOLPHE XVETREMS, OF BRUSSELS, BELGIUM.
COIN-FREED MECHANISM FOR REL-EASING BOX-LIDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part `cf Letters Patent No. 587,666, dated August 3, 1897;
Application ned October 27, 1696. serian-1,610,212. N6 model.) Patented in Belgium Jennery 15, 1695,11@ 113,640, and
January 30, 1895, No. 113,881, and in France September 14, 1895,1To. 290,281.
To CLZ whom t may ccnccrlt:
Be it known that we, MICHEL DE ZUR# MHLEN and ADOLPHE WETEEMS, gentlemen, of Brussels, Belgium, have invented an Improvement in Coin-Freed Mechanism for Releasing Box-Lids, (for which we have obtained Letters Patentin Belgium, No. 113,610, dated January 15, 1895, and No. 113,881, dated January 39, 1895, and in France, No. 290,281, dated September 14, 1895,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for allowing by insertion of a coin the opening of the lid of a box containing articles such as bon-bons, perfumes, smelling-salts, vials of liquor, or the like, such a box being adapted to be xed to the back of a seat in a theater or other place of resort or to be secured in a convenient position in a railway or tramway car or other conveyance.
W'e shall describe the mechanism for releasing the lid of the box, referring to the ac- I companying drawings.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line .es of Fig. 1.
A is a slot by which a coin of predetermined size and value is introduced. The coin falls int-o a yoke C till it comes to rest on shoulders B B. The yoke C is connected by a rod F to the stem of a button K, which passes through alateral slot. On moving this button to the right the yoke C, along with the coin, is drawn to the right in opposition to a spring'E. The coin, meeting the inclined end of a sliding latch P, pushes P upward, and an inclined piece p, raised by it, acting against the inclined side of a notch in the sliding bolt S,
causes S to move to the left in opposition to' a spring T, releasing a hook projecting down from the lid H, which is then free to be opened, giving access to the articles in the box L. The hinges of the lid may be provided with a spring, so that the lid opens a little as soon as it is released. The lid may have a glazed opening through which the contents of the box may be seen. On letting go the knob K the coin, being in a position beyond the shoulders B B, drops into the receptacle M, and the yoke C is moved by the spring E back to the position immediately under A ready to receive another coin.
Having thus described the nature of our invention and the best means of carrying the same into practice, we claim- A box having the lid adapted to be released by the insertion of a coin, the said box being provided with a slot, a spring-actuated yoke into which the coin falls, a pull and a lid provided with a hook, in combination with a sliding spring-bolt S engaging with the said hook and provided with an inclined surface, and a sliding latch provided with two inclined surfaces, one to engage with the inclined surface on the said bolt, and the other adapted to be acted upon by the coin, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
