FOLDING PACKAGE-CARRIER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 587,558, dated August 3, 1897.

Be it known that we, VAN A. REED and JAMES W. REED, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Folding Package-Carrier, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to improvements in folding package-carriers made of paper, cardboard, canvas, or other suitable material which can be conveniently adjusted for use, as a satchel or box, and which is of a simple nature and easily put together.

The invention consists in a folding package and carrier constructed and arranged in the manner hereinafter first described in detail and then specifically pointed out in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the preferred form of our improvedpackage and carrier. Fig. 2 is a trans verse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section. Fig. at is a perspective view of a modified arrangement of the package and carrier, and Fig. 5 is a view of the blank from which the box or package is formed.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals indicate like parts in all the figures, 1 1 indicate the side portions of the package or box, 2 the bottom piece, and 3 and 6 the end members which form the top of the box, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. By referring to the said Fig. 2 it will be observed that the member 6,which is bent up and forms the extension of one of the side portions 1, is of a less length than the member 3, which is bent up and forms an extension of the other side portion 1, it being also seen that by forming the extension 3 as shown the same when lapped over the member 6 will have a pro jecting portion 4, extending beyond the side portion 1, having the extension 6, which extended portion 4 is provided with a plurality of notches 5,for a purpose presently explained.

The side members 1 have openings or eyelets 8 near their upper and lower ends, which are arranged in line with the notches 5 in the member 3.

9 indicates the carrier wire or cord, which is doubled upon itself at one end to form a loop 10, and which in the preferred construction has its free ends passed through the openings 8 at the upper end of one of the side members 1, extended down on the inside of such side member, then passed out through the.

openings 8 at the lower end of the side member, then passed under the bottom of the box or package and through the openings 8 at the lower end of the other side member 1, then up on the inside of such side member 1, out through the openings 8 at the upper end of such side member, then up through the notches 5 and through the loop 10, the ends being then joined to a suitable handle member 12, as shown.

It will be readily seen that by providing the member 3 with a projecting portion having notches 5 and passing the carrier-wire over and connecting the same with the box or package in the manner described and shown that the carrier-wire as the package is carried in the hand will be drawn together at the upper -ends by the weight of the contents of the box and thereby cause the upper ends 3 and 6 to press in opposite directions and hold said upper end rigid in a closed position, the notches 5 also serving as guides to hold the upper end of the carrier-wire in a proper position.

To facilitate the ready folding of the box or package and to render the ends thereof rigid enough to prevent them from readily opening when the package is filled, one of the side portions 1 is provided with uncut end flaps 7, which are adapted to fold inward, as shown at Fig. 3, while the other side member 1 has flaps 14, having slits to receive the tongue members 13 of the bottom portion 2 and similar members 16 of the top member 3, which tongues may be made tapering with straight edges, as indicated in Fig. 5, or provided with lock ends, as shown in Fig. 1.

I11 Fig. 4 we have shown a slightly-modified arrangement of the manner of forming the package and the carrier therefor. In this construction instead of making the upper end of the box with an extended portion the member 3 is provided with a tongue 30, which engages a slit in the member 6 to hold the upper ends together by the drawing pressure of the carrier wire or cord as the package is carried. The member 6 is provided with addi- I tional openings or eyelets SO, and also openings or eyelets 81in the bottom piece 2, (see dotted lines, Fig. 5,) the top member 3 in this structure being also provided with eyelets, which register with one set of the eyelets 80 in the member 6. In this latter construction the carrier wire or cord has its ends passed through the opening in the member 6, then out through the openings at the upper end of the side members 1, from whence they extend down, pass into the openings at the lower end of said member 1 through the openings in the bottom of the box under the same, then up on the other side in a like member, and connected at the top in a manner clearly understood by reference to Fig. 4.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought the advantages of our improvement will readily appear. The package can be readily used for various purposes, and the several parts securely held to their interlocking condition by the drawing or clamp pressure of the opposite portions of the carrierwire, it being obvious that owing to thepeculiar construction and arrangement of the members 3 and 6 and the manner in which the carrier-Wire connects With the upper end of the box and the member 3, and so long as the package is carried in the hand it will be impossible for the upper end to accidentally en.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination with the box having its sides provided with openings 8, near the upper and lower ends, and with interlocking end folds, one of such sides having an extension 6, the other an extension 3, of greater 40 .width than the extension 6, said extension 3 having notches 5, of the carrier wire or cord. having a loop member 10, and having its ends passed from the outside through the openings 8 at the top of one of the sides, thence from the inside through the openings 8 at the bottom of such side, thence under the box,thence from the outside through the opening 8 at the bottom of the opposite side member, thence from the inside through the notches in the member thence under the loop 10 and terminating in a handle portion, all being arranged substantially as shown and for the purposes described;
