UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.v
ANDREW C. KANE, OF PEORIA, ILLINOIS.
THlLL-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 587,440, dated August 3, 1897.
Application filed November l0, 1896. Serial No. 611,645. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ANDREW C. KANE, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in rPhill-Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a novel construction in thill-couplings, the object being to provide a thill coupling that will enable the shafts to be readily applied or removed from the axle without loosening bolts or turning levers and which will obviate the use of antirattlers.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating this invention, Figure l is aV section through the thill-coupling. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a modified form of the Jchill-coupling. Fig. 3 is a section through the same.
In the several views like characters ofreference indicate like parts.
The axle l has a clip 2 of the ordinary form.
The clip 2 is provided with a bracket 3, hav.
ing a circular opening 4 and a slot 5 in the upper side thereof. A disk 6 revolves within the opening 4 and is provided with a slot 7 adapted to register with the slot 5 of the lug 3. A recess 8 is formed in the periphery of the disk 6. A screw 9 is inserted through the bracket 3. The end of the screw projects within the recess 8 of the disk 6 and prevents lateral movement of the disk. The shaft-iron 10 is attached to the shaft or pole in the usual manner. The ends 11 of the shaft-iron are bifurcated to closely engage the bracket 3 and provided with a centrally-located web 12, adapted to fit within the slot 7 of the disk 6. It is plain that the web 12 may be either an integral portion of the shaft-iron or may be a web-shaped bolt. The downward motion of the shafts is limited by the hook-shaped ears 13, which'engage with the projections 14:.
In operation the disk 6 is turned till the slot 7 registers with the slot 5, when the web 12 is inserted and the shaft or pole dropped to its normal position, when the shafts will be firmly attached to the axle.
It will be seen from the foregoing description 'that a coupling of this kind will do away with antirattlers, bolts, and leversand provide a simple and efficient chill-coupling.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a thill-coupling, the combination with an axle-clip, of a bracket having a central cylindrical opening and a slot extending therefrom, a slotted disk provided with a peripheral groove adapted to rotate therein, a setscrew in the bracket adapted to enter said peripheral groove and hold the disk within the bracket, a shaft having a bifurcated end adapted to closely engage said bracket, a web adapted to fit within said slotted disk, and hook-shaped ears, and projections upon said bracket in the path of said ears.
In testimony whereof l have signed this speoiiication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ANDREW C. KANE. Witnesses:
