JOHN E. TAYLOR, OF CHELSEA, MASSACHUSETTS.
LUBRICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 587,409, dated August 3, 1897. Application filed December 24, 1896. Serial No. 616,893. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN E. TAYLOR, a citibricators.
My object is to provide an extremely simple and cheap lubricator, which can be readily attached to the rear fork of a bicycle, which will apply the lubricant to the chain only when the latter lags, so that there will be no additional friction during the effective movement of said chain, as when the pedals are moving forwardly and downwardly.
Having this object in view, the invention consists of certain improved features and novel combinations of parts, so arranged as to provide an improved lubricator, as will appear more fullyin the following description, the appended claim, and the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a bicycle equipped with'niy improved lubricator, and Fig. 2 is a detail view of the device.
The numeral 1 designates the rear fork of a bicycle, and 2 the chain. The numeral 3 designates a tank of small size, and this is connected by an ordinary form of clip 4 to the rear fork, about midway the two sprocketwheels. The tank is adapted to contain the lubricant, and in the upper portion of said sole purpose of supporting the chain when it slacks and preventing the weight of the chain from coming directly on the felt roller.
It will be observed that, owing to the construction and disposition of the device, the lubricant will not be applied to the chain when the upper portion of said chain is stretched, inasmuch as the device is located between the upper and lower portions of said chain. When the chain slacks, however, the upperportion thereof drops on the metal roller and comes in contact with the felt roller, so that the lubrication is obtained.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a lubricator for bicycle-chains, the combination with a receptacle adapted to contain a lubricant. and secured to the bicycle-frame, of an upper roller journaled in said receptacle and which is adapted to support the'chain, and a lower roller journaled in said receptacle, which latter member serves to convey the lubricant directly to the chain.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN E. TAYLOR.
