UNITED STATES PATENT @FFICE,
WILLIAM MASON, OF NEIV HAVEN,
CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE LIMITING AND- RETAINING DEVICE FOR OPERATING-BARS OF BREECH-LOADERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,856, dated July 20, 1897.
Application filed October 5, 1895.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM MASON, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Magazine-Firearms; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in- Figure 1, a broken View, in side elevation, of an arm constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a view thereof in longitudinal section on the line a b of the preceding figure.
Hy invention relates to an improvement in that class of take-down magazine-firearms which are provided with removable barrels and sliding, supporting, and operating handles located forward of their frames and movable back and forth in a line parallel with the longitudinal axis of the gun-barrel, the 0bj ect being to provide for connecting such ha [1- dles with the barrel, so that they will not get out of place when the same is detached from the frame of the arm.
With these ends in view my invention con sists in a take-down magazine-firearm having certain details of construction and combinations of parts,as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In carrying out my invention, as herein shown, I employ a sliding, operating, and supporting handle A, adapted to slide back and forth in a line parallel with the longitudinal axis of the gun-barrel B, which is provided at its. butt-end with a yoke C and adapted to be removably connected in any approved manner with the forward end of the frame D, against which the yoke C abuts. The said handle is constructed with a rearwardly-extending action-bar E, having a long slot E formed in its outer face for the reception of the inner end of a retaining-screw F,mounted in the yoke C, which contains an opening C, through which the rear end of the action-bar passes, the extreme rear end of the said bar being adapted to be coupled with the action mechanism, which is not shown, of the arm. It will be readily understood that the move- Serial No. 564,713. (No model.)
ment of the bar back and forth is limited by the engagement of the end walls of its slot E with the retaining-screw. It will also be understood that when the barrel and its attached yoke are disconnected from the frame D the handle will be prevented from shucking back and forth through the medium of the retaining-screw and action-bar, inasmuch as the disconnection of the barrel from the frame does not involve disturbing the relation of the retaining-screw with reference to the said bar.
The handleA may be arranged to slide back and forth upon a tubular magazine Gr, combined with the gun-barrel and also embraced by the yoke C, or it may be connected with the gun-barrel in some approved manner or with the forestook of the arm. I do not therefore limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described, but hold myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations therein as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described myinven tion, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a take-down firearm, the combination with the frame thereof, of a gun-barrel, a tubular magazine located below the said gunbarrel, and connected at its forward end therewith, a band applied to the rear end of the gun-barrel and to the rear end of the tubular magazine, and permanently connecting them, and formed with a transverse opening; a sliding supporting and operating handle located upon the tubular magazine and movable back and forth in a line parallel with the longitudinal axis of the gun-barrel, a rearwardly-extending action-bar connected at its forward end with the handle, passing through the said transverse opening in the said band, adapted at its rear end to be connected with the action mechanism of the gun, and having a longitudinal slot formed in its outer face; and a retaining-screw or equivalent part permanently mounted in the band and entering the opening therein, and projecting into the slot in the action-bar, whereby when the gun is taken down and the barrel, magazine, band, handle and bar are disconnected from the frame of the gun, the said screw or equivalent part willcoact with the ends of the slot in the bar to prevent the bar and hence the In testimony whereof I have signed this handle from undue shucking back and forth specification in the presence of two subscrib on the magazine, and whereby the sides of ing witnesses.
the slot will coact With the screw or equiva- WILLIAM MASON. 5 lent part to prevent the handle from rotating Witnesses:
on the magazine, substantially as and for the DANIEL H. VEADER,
purpose set forth. WILLIAM S. BALDWIN.
