GEORGE M. MCELLIOTT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINATION MECHANICAL TOQL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,798, dated July 20, 1897'.
Application filed May 22, 1897. Serial No. 687,815x (No model.)
To alt wit/0m itintag colwcrm Beitknown that I, GEORGE M. McELLIorT, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Mechanical Tools, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention has relation to a combinationtool for carpenters, draftsmen, and other workmen; and in such connection it relates to the construction and particular arrangement of such a tool.
The principal object of my present invention is to provide atool of comparatively simple construction embodying a main square, a mitering or centering square adj ustably and removably secured to one end of the main square, a trammel-point adapted to be removably secured to the angle of the main square, a second trammel-point adapted to slide on one of the arms of the main square toward or away from the fixed trammel-point, and a foot-rule adapted to be I adj ustably secured to the free end of one of the arms of the main square, and the said instrumentalities adapted to be employed in conjunction with each other in one instrument or tool of my said invention for sundry purposes hereinafter defined.
My invention, stated in general terms, consists of a combination mechanical tool constructed and arranged in substantially the manner hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tool embodying main features of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of the parts of the tool detached from each other.
Referring to the drawings, (t represents the main square having the two graduated arms a and (F, in each of which is set a spiritlevel 64 At the corner or angle of the main square (I. is removably secured a trammelpoint I), and on either arm a or a is adapted to slide a movable trammel-pointb, the levels a being set below the surface of the arm a or a so as not to prevent the sliding of the movable trammel-point b.
At the free end of preferably the shorter arm a is removably secured one arm of a mitering or centering square (I, the lower end of the two arms cl and (I being adapted to enter suitable grooves or channels a and (t in the other arm (6 of the main square to prevent lateral movement of the centeringsquare (Z. At the free end of the other arm a is removably secured a foot-rule e, the lower end of which is preferably mitered, as at e. The centering-square (Z is preferably secured to the main square as follows: The arm a is transversely slit or recessed, as at (N, and the upper end, of one arm at of the centering-square is inserted in this recess, after which a thumb or tightening screw a is passed through the arm ct and the arm (1. The rule 6 is preferably secured to the arm a in substantially the same manner, the arm (6 having a recess or slit a in which the rule 6 is adapted to slide. The rule 6, however, is provided with a longitudinally-arranged opening or recess e through which and the arm a a thumb or tightening screw a is adapted to be inserted.
The tool as above constructed, consisting of the several instrumntalities used in con junction with each other, is adapted for a variety of uses or purposes, the principal of which are as follows: The main square a, with its levels a and a, is adapted for use in all squaring operations, together with plumbing and leveling, in the usual manner. The mitering or centering square (I may be used for either mitering or for obtaining the center of round objects. The trammel-points I) and I) may be used for tralnmeling, gaging, or for tracing circles in the manner of a compass. The center square has one arm (1 longer than the other arm (Z and this arm d is graduated to inches and fractions of inches and is of particular use in mitering. The foot-rule 6 may likewise be used both for measurements and for mitering.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A mechanical tool, comprising a main square having a spirit-level mounted in each of the arms a and a thereof, a trammelpoint secured at the angle of the arms of said square, a centering or mitering square at one end fitted into a recess of the arm a, of said main square and secured by a thumb or tightening screw and the other end of said centering or mitering square engaging a groove formed in the arm d of said main square, a movable trammel-point mounted} on the arm a of said main square and held in required fixed position by means of a thumb ortightening screw and a slotted graduated r foot-rule pivoted to the free end of the arm a of said main square, all arranged substantially as and for the purposes described. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
