CHURN-DASHER.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 586,754, dated July 20, 1897. Application filed June 13, 1894:. Serial No. 514,446. (No model.)
To all whom if; may conccrn:
Be it known that I, PELEG O. BARLOW, a Citizen of the United States, residin g at Buckhannon, in the county of Upshur and State of XVest Virginia, have invented a new and useful Churn-Dasher, of which the following is a specification.
My inventiou relates to dashers, and has for its object to provide an adjustable dasher of Which the arms are extensible without affecting the attachment thereof to the dasherstaff, said arms being independently adjustable, whereby the blades may be caused to operate in the same or different paths.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly point-cd out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a dasher construeted in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the spider. Fig. 4- is a similar view of one of the blades.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The improved dasher comprises a central member orspider 1, having a central collar 2, perforated to receive the dasher staff, whereon it is to be mounted, from opposite sides of which project alined arms. The upper and lower surfaces of the member 1 are flattened, and the arms are provided in their under sides with longitudinal recesses extend- 'ng from the collar 2 and opening at the ends of said arms and formingr guideways 3 in the arms, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The arms of the spider or member 1 are also provided with slots 8, of less width than and alined with the guideways 3, along the center of which they eXtend, and said slots 8 open at the upper surface of the arms and are of less length than the recesses, so that they do not extend to the outer ends of the arms, and are consequently closed at their outer ends.
-l indicates the inovable members of the dasher, of which, as shown in the drawings, two are employed, each having a shank or body of rectangular cross-section to fit and slide in the guideways 3 in the arms of the spider or central member l. The outer ends of the movable members 4 are enlarged, as shown at 5, each being at this point made to correspond in cross-section to the arms of the spider, there being shoulders f ormed at said enlargements 5, which shoulders abut against the ends of the arms, so that where the members 4 are slid toWard each other to their fullest extent the surfaces of the member of the enlargements 5 of the members -l Will be sul)- stantially uniform, as shown in Fig. 1.
Each movable member -l of the dasher is provided in the end of its shank portion With an opening, as shown in Fig. et, extending through it and adapted to correspond with the slot 8 in the corresponding arm of the spider when the shank is in the guideway therein, and said opening is adapted for the passage of a bolt 6, also passed through and adapted to play in the slot 8 and headed to engage the upper face of the arm, wherein the said slot is formed at opposite sides of said slot.
The lower end of each bolt is engaged by a wing-nut 7, and by this construction it will be seen the movable members 4 may be securely locked to the arms of the spider or central member l when they have been properly adjusted.
The outer enlarged portion 5 of each movable member a of the dasher is provided with a blade having a flattened outer surface 9, extending at right angles to the shank or body portion of said movable member and having one corner beveled off to form a longitudinal surface extending substantially at right angles to the flattened outer surface of the blade, the angle thus formed by said surfaces projecting beyond the remaining portions of the blades and member 4 and being adapted to traverse the inner surface of the churn-body Wherein the dasher is arranged.
From the above description it will be seen that the improved dasher may be used in cans of different diameters, and, furthermore, the blades may be made to traverse different paths by the adjustment of the movable members or slides at different eXtensions in order to increase the agitation of the contents of the receptacle.
Theimproved dasher comprises three members, of which the central or fixed member is IOG adapted to beupermanently secured bymeans of its collar 2 to a dasher-staff or any suitable shaft or spindle, the movable members Which are mounted upon said fiXed member being adjustable independently of the connection of said fixed member With the dasherstaff, Whereby the efficiency of the attachment of the dasher embodying my invention is not diminished by reason of the adjustability of the blades. It Will be seen, furthermore, that the improved dasher may be employed use the members may be readily detached, for Which reason thumb-nuts are employed to look the movable members at the desired eX- tension.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction maybe resorted to Without departing or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having described my invention, What I claim is-` A ohurn-dasher formed of a central member having a central collar perforated for the passageof a dasher-staff and provided With alined arms projecting fromiopposite sides of said collar, the under sides of said arms being provided With recesses forming guid eways v in any ordinary form of ehurn, and that in order to facilitate oleansing after v from the spirit i extendinglongitudinally from the central collar and opening at the ends of therarms, said arms being also provided With longitudinallyextending slots of less Width than and arranged centrally along the guideways, movable members having shanks fitting in and slidable along said guideways and provided With openings oorresponding With the slots in the arms of the central member, enlargements on the outer ends of the shanks corresponding in cross-section With and forming shoulders to engage the ends of the arms VWhen the movable members are adjusted toWard each other, blades projecting at right angles from the enlargements and having their outer surfaees beveled to form an angle projeoting beyond the other portions of the blade and shank and adaptedto traverse the inner surface of the churn-body, bolts passed through the slots in the arms and the openings in the shanks, and nuts in the bolts, substantially as described.
