SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,690, (lat-d July 20; 1897.
Appliention filed February 1, 1897. Serial No. 621,563. No munch To u// 7171 0111, it may concur/2: v
lie. it known that I, JOsEPH Pittilit, a cilizen oi the United States residing o t- Chicago in the county of Cook and Stntc of Illinois, hnve invented certain new and useful 1m provrnnenis in Nicicel-in-Slotfll iehinc At 'l'nclnneui's; and ldo hereby declare the folhiu'ingt'o he a full, clenr, and-exact descriplion oi the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it nppertaius to mzliitr nnd use the name.
My invention relnl'es to a novel construe tion in an attachment forsocalled nickel-inslot unit'ahines, the ohjcct being to provide a device for receiving the coin which will pref vent a coin of any denomination other than lug inserted in n second slot until the coin lirst inserted therein shnll have passed into and opt-rated the machine; and it consistsin the features of construction and rombinntions of parts hercinnltcr fully described and ltlz llll l.
in the aeeonipnnyingdrairings, illnstrat-ing my invention, l igure l is {t front elevation of n device constructed according to in invention. Fig. i is a rear elevation of the some. Fig. is n sectional view on the line 3 3 ol. ilig. Fig. i is El,- scclionnl view on the line l: l ol' Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a sectional \lOlV on the ine 5 5 ol Fig. 2.
llmerriugnow tosnid ijlrairings, A indicates n pinto provided with n pl 11 rnlity of slots 1 and with llaug'es 2 on three sides, which extend rem-nari'lly therefrou'i. tili dingly mounted upon the inner face of saidplatc A isn slide 3, consisting of nreecssed plate provided with pockets 4, which is gnidcd in. its n'zoveinents ll inennsof lugs 51 and (i, and a recess 7 in one of said flanges of said plate, through which the thumbdeco at one end of said slide 3 is adapted to puss: and by means of high the some is operated. Said lugs l cxiend inwardly from the inner'i'ncc of said plate A and upon their othnremls carry n j, ate l provided with n series of depending pockets ll), through which said coin is adapted to pass when sold pockets 1 iil'O brought into aliuenient lherewil h. nid slide is ndnpted to be I held norznn-lly in position, so that the pockets 4 therein shall be in alinemcnt with said slots 3 in said plate A by means of a spring'11,in-
pockets .l'. and :1 lug 13 in one corner of said plate A. By pressing on said thumlrpiece 8 said pockets .l: are brought into alinemcnt with said pockets 10, through which the coin held in each ol'said pockets i are then dropped 60 to pass into the machine. This movement of the plate is ng'niust the action of said spring 1i, and said plate is adnp-zed tobe held in its last-named position against the action of said Itorposed between a lug 12 on one of said 55 n lug 15 oirsaid plate 0 and adapted to engage 11- notch 16 in said portion of said plate 3, upon :i nickel to be inserted to operlite the inaohinef wi'll prevent it coin tied to a string being used,- and will nlso prevent a second coin from bewhich said tliumbpiece is mounted. Said detent let ishold no rmnlly in engngementwith the lower edge of said thuinh-picee-carrying' 7o arm by means of a spring 17, secured at one end to said detent and at its other end to any suitable portion of the casing or other portion .ot the machine, so that when said slide is moved inwnrdtv said detcnt will spring into 75 engagement with. said notch 16 as soon as some comes into position with relation thereto. 1 it will be noted that said plate 9 partially covers the inner ed ges of said pockets at, thus decreasing the size of the'same, so that the coin .80 therein cannot pztss out, whileat said pockets 10 said plate 9 isnotched, so as to completely free the opening on theinner end of each of said pockets at, and'thus permit the coin to pass frcel y from said pocket 4 to said pocket 85 10. It will be noted that when said plate 3 is normally at the outer limit of its movement said-pockets 4; are in alinement with said slots 1 and that in pressing said plate to the inner limit of its movement said pockets 4' are 0 thrown entirely out of alinement with said slots 1, and before coming into" alin'ement with said pockets 10 the plate 3 completely covers said slots 1, so that should a coin on a string be inserted into said pocket 4 the string 9 5 would he caught between the inner face of said nnd said plate 3 and either cut oil? or h old sin l'liriently by friction that it would be impossible [or the coin to move from its position in said pocket -l. further advantages of preventing more than one coin from being inserted into one of said spring by means of a detent 14, pivoted upon 65 My device has the loo slots, thus preventing breakage of the machin e, anltalso that when the slide 3 is brought into position to permit the coins held in the pockets =t' to'pass through said pockets said slots 1 are closed to prevent the insertion of any coin u n til the coins in said pockets i have passed through said pockets 1() and said plate 3 has been released and brought back into the position shown in Figs. land 3. Said detent 14 is adapted to be operated by any suitable hand mechanism to throw the same out of engagement with said notch 1b.
, I claim as my invention- 1. in a device of the kind specified, a plate provided with slots, rearwardly extending lugs on said plate, a plate carrying dependin g pockets mounted on said lugs, and a plate slidingly mounted between said firstrnained plates and provided with pockets adapted to be brought alternately into alinement withsaid slots and said pockets, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the kind specified, a plate provided with slots, rearwardly-extending lugs on said plate, a plate carrying depending pockets mounted/0n said Jugs, a plate slidingly mounted between said first-named plates and provided with pockets adapted to be brought alternately into alinement with said slots and said pockets, and devices for operating said sliding plate, substantially as described.
2;. In a device of the kind specified, a plate provided with slots, lugs on said plate, a plate carrying depentb ing pockets mounted on said lugs, a plate slidingly mounted between said first-named plates and provided with pockets adapted to rearwa rdly extendin g" be brought alternately int-o alinement with said slots and said pockets, and devices for operating said sliding plate, consisting of a spring engaging said plate and adapted to hold the same so that the pockets therein are in alinement with said slots, and a spring-eperateddetent adapted to engage said plate to hold the same at the other limit of its moveinent to hold said pockets therein in alinement with said pockets in said rearmost plate, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signatnresu in presence of two witnesses.-
JOSEPII li-tli'lA.
