A. K. SAGEN.
SELF CLOSING INKSTAND.
No. 586,668. Patented July 20, 1897.
INVENTOR W JVESSES QB 5 W UNIThb STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREIV K. SAGEN, OF LA GROSSE, IVISCONSIN.
SELF-CLOSING INKSTAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,668, dated July 20, 1897.
Application filed $eptember 26, 1896. Serial No. 607,083, (No model.)
To a]! Ira 1.0111 [f' 711.1/ 1 amaze/"1t.
Be it known that 1, ANDREW K. SAGEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Crosse, in the county of La Crosse and State of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Closing Inkst-ands; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has reference to a novel construction in an inkstand, the object being to provide a construction whereby an inkstand will automatically close, so as to prevent the evaporation of the ink.
The invention consists in the features of con struction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical section of an inkstand constructed in accordance with this invention and showing in dotted lines the position of the parts when the mouth of the inkstand is closed. Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Referring to said drawings, 1 indicates the base, having a socket to receive an ink-bottle and provided at its rear end portion with uprights 2, the upper ends of which can support a pen-rack. Pivoted between the uprights 2 is a plate 3, extending forwardly over the seat for the ink-bottle and provided with an aperture 4., having a suitable packing 5 to form a tight joint with the mouth of the bottle. This plate 3 can be easily lifted when it is desired to remove the bottle. Pivoted near the upper ends of the uprights 2 is a vibratory frame 6, consisting of the depending arms '7, pivoted at their upper ends to the uprights 2 and connected at the lower ends by a cross-piece S and provided with forwardly-extending arms 9, joined at their outer ends by a finger-piece 10. The forward movement of the vibrating frame 6 is controlled by a stop 11, fastened to the plate 3 and in the path of the cross-piece 8 of said frame. Secured to said cross-piece S and extending forwardly is a spring-arm 12, that carries at its forward end a ball 13, which turns upon a pivot 1st, hold by the bifurcated end of the spring-arm 12. The parts are normally in position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the spring-arm 12 being always under tension.
hen it is desired to dip the pen in the ink bottle, the hand or fingers are first brought into contact with the finger-piece 1.0 to depress the same, which rocks the frame 6 on its pivot, thereby throwing the ball 13 rearwardly and bending the spring-arm, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1, thus opening the ink-bottle so the pen can be dipped therein. lVhen the hand is removed from the fingerpiece, the spring-arm 12 serves to force the vibrating frame forward to bring the ball on the end of the spring-arm into the opening 4 of the plate 3, the stopper l1 limiting the forward movement of the vibrating frame.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an inkstand, the combination with a base having a socket, an ink-bottle situated within said socket, uprights upon said base, a pivoted apertured plate secured to said uprights and adapted to rest upon said bottle, of a vibratory frame pivoted to said uprights and having a spring-arm provided with a rotatable valve resting upon said apertured plate and adapted to close the aperture therein and a forwardly-extendin g arm and fin gerpiece, substantially as described.
2. The combination with the uprights havin g a pivoted plate provided with an aperture, a stop upon said plate, of the vibrating frame having a cross-piece to engage said stop, a spring-arm and valve to engage said plate, and a forwardly-extending arm provided with a finger-piece, substantially as described.
3. The combination with the base having the uprights and an ink-bottle, of a pivoted plate having an opening and resting upon said ink-bottle, and a vibrating frame having a spring-arm and ball and a finger-piece, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ANDRFHV K. SAGEN.
