I 7; fi d UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JONATHAN DIOKASON, OF AGOSTA, OHIO.
NUT-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N0. 586,546, dated July 20, 1897.
Application filed September 24, 1896. Serial No. 606,814. No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN DICKASON, of Agosta, in the county of Marion and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in nut-locks.
The object of the invention is to provide a nut-lock so constructed of a minimum number of parts and capable of quick and accurate operation and one in which the locking means is so arranged that the nut and washer can be removed at will and easily locked against rotation when desired.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in combinations and arrangements of parts, more fully described hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view showing my invention in a locked position, a round washer in this instance being employed. Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing the locking device in side elevation. Fig. 3 is a front elevation; andFig. at is an inverted view of washer of Figs. 1, 2, and 3.
Like letters of reference mark the same parts throughout the different views.
a indicates a beam or rail having the usual bolt-hole for the reception of the bolt. Above this bolt-hole is a transverse groove 1), and directly below the bolt-hole is a notched or cut-away portion 0, the purpose of which will be shortly described.
(Z indicates a washer made of any desirable shape, this washer being provided with the cut-away portions on its upper outer edges and being provided with the transverse slot or groove 6, extending entirely across the under side of the upper portion of said washer.
f is a teat or projection preferably punched out from the face of the washer, this teat or projecting part entering the notched or cutaway portion 0 of'the rail when the washer is placed in position.
f represents the locking-key, formed of any desirable material, and this yoke or key is so formed as to have the horizontal base 9 and the upwardly-extending arms h h, as shown. This locking key or yoke is inserted between the washer and the rail or beam so as to rest in the groove 7) of the rail and the slot or groove 6 of the washer and be easily mov able therein.
In operation after the bolt has been passed through the beam or rail the locking key or yoke is placed in position and the washer placed on the bolt. The not is then screwed home, and after the several parts have been sufficiently tightened the upwardly-extended arms h h are turned down against the sides of the nut, thereby locking the washer and the several other parts in the desired position against rotation. It should be noticed that the washer will not turn, as the arms h 71 when turned down enter the cutaway or notched portions of the washer at the upper portion thereof.
Certain other slight changes might be made in the form and construction of the parts herein described without departing fromthe spirit and scope of myinvention. Henceldo not Wish to confine myself to the exact con struction herein set forth.
WVh-at I claim is 1. A nut-lock consisting of the rail or beam, a washer having recesses or cut-away portions in the upper periphery thereof, a groove in the inner surface of said washer, a locking key adapted to fit in said groove and the arms of said key adapted to turn out and bear against either side of the nut, locking the same as shown and described.
2. A nut-lock comprising the washer, a bolt-hole therein, a teat or depression formed in the edge of said bolt-hole, a groove in the inner surface of said washer, a key adapted to rest in said groove and having arms adapted to turn outwardly on either side of the nut for the purpose set forth.
3. In a nut-lock the combination of a Washer, the recesses in the upper periphery thereof, a groove in its inner surface and akey loosely held in said groove and having arms adapted to turn outwardly and bear against either 10 side of the nut substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aifix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JONATHAN DICKASON.
