MIXING-DRUM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,483, dated July 13, 1897.
Application filed December 16, 1896. Serial No. 615,937. (No model.) Patented in Germany February 13, 1896, No. 89,886.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, ERNST GAUHE, manufacturer, a citizen of the German Empire, residing at Ober-Lahnstein-on-the-Rhine, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mixing-Drums, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, and for which I have received a patent in Germany, No. 89,886, dated February 13, 1896.
The present invention relates to mixingdrums for all kinds of material, and more especially to drums for mixing mortar, concrete, and the like; and the invention consists of the particular construction of the said drum with regard to the means for filling and emptying the same, to an automatic device for removing and fastening the cover, and to the particular arrangement of stirrer-blades within the drum, as hereinafter more particularly set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In order to render the present specification more easily intelligible, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference denote similar parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the drum; Fig. 2, a side elevation; Fig. 3, a front elevation of the drum detached, showing the lever device for fastening and releasing the cover 5 Fig. 4, a detached side elevation of the drum seen from the right-hand side of Fig. 3; Fig. 5, a similar elevation to Fig. 4, showing the cover removed and the pawl for actuating the cover-bow thrown forward in the path of the said cover-bow and about to be disengaged when it is desired to again close the drum. Fig. 6 is a similar elevation, showing the disengaging-pawl about to be thrown back out of the path of the cover-securing how after the cover has been closed 3 and Fig. 7 is an elevation, on a reduced scale, of means for driving the drum.
The drum 1) is mounted in the frame A at one side on a hollow trunnion supported in a ring a, running on rolls 0 C, and at the other side in the bearing B on its trunnion a, which carries a gear D, Fig. 7, engaged by a pinion E, driven by a pulley F in any suitable manner. The mouth G of a feed-hopper G extends through the hollow trunnion of the drum, so that material may be fed to the drum while the same is rotating. The drum is further provided with an outlet-opening c, covered by means of a spring cover (1, over which a bow a loosely mounted on the dru m-trunnions, grips and retains the cover in position over the outlet owing to the elasticity of the said cover.
\Vithin the drum are arranged sets of stirrer-blades H, set at an angle to the direction of rotation of thedrum, as may be clearly seen from Figs. 3 and 4. In proximity to the said drum a stationary bar e is mounted in suitable hearings in the machine-frame, said bar being capable of rotation and carrying at about its center a tripping-pawl e, which when the bar is turned may be thrown into the path of the lug e on the cover-bow a so that as the drum continues to rotate the spring-cover, with the bow, will be pushed off the opening 0 and the contents of the drum may be discharged. Mounted fast on a trunnion of the drum and adapted to rotate with the same is an arm f, having a lateral pin f, and a pawl g, pivoted at g and having an upwardly-extending arm pivoted to a lever h, is so arranged that when a pin at the end of a lever 2', fast on the bar e is placed in the slot h of the lever h, Fig. 6, the said pawl shall lie in the path described by the pin f of the arm f when the drum rotates. Then, however, the pin of the arm 2' is placed in the slot h of the lever 71, Fig. 4, the pawl g is withdrawn from the path of movement of the p f- The operation of the device takes place in the following manner If it is desired to open the cover d of the drum, the tripper e is thrown round by a hand-lever 6 into the path of movement of the lug e of the bow. When the bow comes round, the lug strikes against the tripper e, and the motion of the bow and cover will be stopped, so that the drum on rotating passes its outlet-opening c from under the cover d and the contents of the drum will be discharged. In order to close up the outlet-hole again, it is only necessary to adjust the pin of the lever 2' in the slot h of the lever h, when the arm f, with pin f, will strike the pawl g at the moment when the orifice c is under the cover. This will throw the pawl e upward out of the reach of the lug c and the drum will continue to rotate with the cover and bowin proper position over the outlet-orifice.
The hollow trunnion and the feed-hopper G may be omitted and the opening 0 serve as an inlet-and outlet opening.
\Vater or other liquid may be fed to the mixing-drum from a reservoir J and through a feed-pipe leading to the mouth of the hopper G and thence into the drum.
I claim as my invention- 1. A mixing-drum and means for rotating the same, an opening in the periphery of the same, a spring-cover to said opening, a bow loosely pivoted to the trunnions of said drum and adapted to press on the said cover, and
means for arresting said bow and cover when the drum is rotating and allowing the orifice to slide from underneath the same in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
2. A mixing-drum and means for rotating the same, an orifice in the periphery of the same and a spring-cover to said orifice, a bow having its ends loosely pivoted on the axle of said drum, a bar e pivoted in proximity to said drum, a tripping-pawl e mounted on said bar and a lug on the cover-bow, and means for bringing the tripping-pawl 6 into the path of movement of the lug of the bow in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
3. A mixing-drum and means for rotating the same, an orifice to said drum and a springcover. to said orifice, a bow extending round the periphery of said drum and having its ends loosely pivoted to the trunnions of said drum, a lug at about the center of said bow, a bar e mounted in proximity to said drum and a tripping-pawl e on said bar, an arm fast on the drum-axis and a pivoted pawl g having an upwardly or approximately upwardly extending arm, a lever to connect said arm to a lever of the bar e and means for projecting the pawl g into the path of movement of the arm of the drum, said arm being so mounted as to operate the pawl g when the orifice of the drum is under the cover and to force the tripping-pawl 2 out of the path of movement of the lug of the bow substantially as described.

5. The combination of a'rotary drulnhaving an orifice in its periphery, a spring-cover to said orifice, a bow loosely mounted on the trunnions of said drum and connected to the said spring-cover, a lug to said bow, and a ERNST GAUHE.
