A. POLLAK. MOUTHPIEGE FOR CIGARS.
Patented July 13 wz'fnesscs:
\ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARHIN POLLAK, OF RICHMOND,- VIRGINIA.
IMOUTHPIECE FOR CIGARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 586,343, dated. July 13, 1897.
Application filed April 20, 1897.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARMIN POLLAK, a citizen of the United States, residin g at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mouthpieces for Cigars and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which'it appertains to make and use the same. I
My invention relates to improvements in that class of cigars which are provided with mouthpieces; and it has for its general object to provide a cigar having a tubular mouthpiece of oornstalk or similar vegetation which will afiord a soft rest for the teeth, and a filling of excelsior or suitable fibrous substance for absorbing the nicotine and cooling the smoke, so as to prevent the same from burning the tongue, the said excelsior being extended from the inner end of the mouthpiece into the body of the cigar, so as to strengthen the connection of the mouthpiece thereto and at the same time hold the layers of tobacco apart, so as to afiord a free passage for smoke. With the foregoing in view the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claim, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which Figure l is a view of my improved cigar with the mouthpiece and the contiguous portion of the cigar-body in section and the remainder of said body in elevation. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective View of the mouthpiece and its filling, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the line w w of Fig. 1.
Referring by letter to the said drawings, A indicates the body of the cigar, which may be and preferably is formed in the usual wellknown manner and need not therefore be specifically described, and B indicates the tubular mouthpiece, which is connected with the body A at the time of manufacture, said mouthpiece being inserted in one end'of the body, as better shown in Fig. 1, and having a portion of the tobacco forming the body wrapped around it, as shown. The mouthpiece B is formed of cornstalk or similar vegetation, which is desirable because it afiords a soft rest for the teeth of the smoker and also because its pith is readily removable and Serial No. 632,976. (No model.)
permits of its being easily converted into a. tube. Cornstalk and the like is also desir able because when the pith is removed it has a rough interior surface a, calculated to hold the excelsi o1- filling against casual movement.
0 indicates the excelsior filling, which fits tightly within the tube B, and has for its purpose to absorb the nicotine and at the same time to retard the passage of the hot smoke, so as to prevent the same from burning the smokers tongue. This excelsior filling C is preferably formed of a plurality of strips 1), which are bent at or adjacent to their middles, and are of such a length that when the filling is placed in the mouthpiece'with the bends of the excelsior strips at the outer end thereof the end portion a of said excelsior strips will extend inwardly from the inner end of the mouthpiece about the proportional distance illustrated. These end portions 0 of the excelsior filling serve when the cigar is made up to hold the layers of tobacco apart, as better shown in Fig. 3, so as to afiord a free central passage for smoke, and said end portions 0 also serve to strengthen the connection of the mouthpiece to thebody of the cigar.
It will be observed from the foregoingthat a cigar may be made in accordance with my invention almost if not quite as cheaply and easily as the ordinary cigar; and it will also be observed that by reason of my improvements the cigar will smoke freely and easily, and yet the nicotine will be prevented from reaching the smokers mouth and the smoke will be cooled and thus prevented from burning the smokers tongue. It will further be observed that the mouthpiece B enables the smoker to conveniently hold the cigar in his month without placing his lips in contact with the tobacco.
When desirable, an absorbent other than excelsior may be used in the tubular mouthpiece B, but I prefer to use the excelsior because of the twofold function which it serves.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim isv The herein-described cigar consisting essentially of the body, the tu bular'mouthpiece formed of cornstalk from which the pith has been removed, arranged and secured in one end of said body and having the rough intetoo rior surface a, and the nicotine-absorbing and free central passage for smoke, substantially smoke-cooling filling of excelsior C, occnpyas specified. 1 3 ing the tubular mouthpiece and having por- In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature tions extending from the inner end of said in presence of two witnesses.
mouthpiece into the body of the cigar so as ARMIN IOLLAK. to strengthen the connection of the mouth- .Witnesses: piece of said body and at the same time hold 0. b. Dl'Ns'lEn,
the layers of tobacco apart so as to afford a J. 1- ELAM.
