UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TIMOTHY A. REMSEN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HENRY M.
LEE, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y. Y
CAR-FENDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,290, dated July 13, 1897. Application filed February 27, 1897. Serial No. 625,275. (No model.)
To all whom zitmcty concern:
Be it known that I, TIMOTHY A. REMsEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Fenders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in fenders for electric tramway-cars; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangements of parts, as hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
The object of my invention is to provide an automatic fender of extremely simple and inexpensive construction that may be readily attached to any electric tram way-car without having to make numerous changes to the brake and other mechanism now covering the entire bottom of the car.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents so much of a street-car in side elevation as will suffice to illustrate the application of my invention in its extended position; Fig. 2, a plan View of my invention in its extended position, the car being removed; Fig. 3, a side elevation showing the device on a large scale set for use.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The letter A designates the platform of a car, to the under side of which and running parallel to the sides thereof are two bars or guides at a, one on each side of the car and held at either end to the bottom of the car by suitable braces a a and to each end of the side bars a a are arms A having sockets A in their outer ends to receive the pins A A on the supporting-frame, to the outer ends of which is pivoted the wire frame at the sides thereof, as shown, by means of a link A said supporting-frame O suspended to the rectangular frame 13 by means of eye B on each side of the frame.
The letter B-designates a rectangular frame composed of ordinary iron or galvanized pipe, and consists of the two longitudinal side pieces Z) Z) and the front and rear cross-pieces b 19 the front cross-piece b approaching within a few inches of the ground and the side or longitudinal side pieces I) b fitted into eye B on the supporting-frame O to permita slight backward-and-forward movement of the rectangular frame B,regulated and guided by the guideways B on each side of the rectangular frame B and at the same time to-receive the pivot-points B on the sides of the wire frame, and by means of which pivots and the link A the wire frame is permitted to turn or be set when in use.
The letter D designates a second or wiregauze frame, which is covered with wire-netting D and which, like the rectangular frame, I make slightly curved, as shown, and consists of the side curved pieces d d, united at their front and back by transverse bars (1 d said frame being secured to the supportingframe 0 and the rectangular frame, as described above.
To the mid-length of the wire frame D, at the rear portion thereof, I suspend a bifurcated lever E by means of a ring or hook, the lever E consisting of a handle portion S and of a bifurcated portion E, which engages the rear of the rectangular frame (1 and the latch portion G engages the supporting-frame 0 when the device is set for operation or use.
The letters H H designate two springs attached to the supporting-frame and the wire frame D to insure the certain and positive operation of the wire frame byassistin g the wire frame to turn or tip when the device is called into use.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The rectangular frame striking an obstruction on the track is slightly forced backward, which releases the latched lever E from engagement with the supporting-frame,which causes the wire frame to tip forward, assisted 1 by the springs H H on each side of the supporting-frame, when the obstruction is taken up and the device is returned to its normal position ready to be again used, this being done by drawing the lever E back.
The device is to be used on either end of the car and isdone by removing the device from the sockets on the arms a.
WVhat I claim is- 1. In a car-fender, the combination of the rectangular frame having curved arms or sides, a rigid supporting-frame attached to the car, a Wire frame pivotally attached to the supporting-frame, and the suspended bifurcatedleverengagingthereetangularframe by means of its one arm and supporting-frame by means of its other arm, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a car-fender, the combination of the rectangular frame with curved sides and guides thereon, the supporting-frame attached to the car-body, the Wire frame pivotally attached to the supporting-frame, the
