IMPROVEMENT IN METALLIC-BAND FASTENINGS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,574, dated October 9, 1866.

Be it known that l', ARTHUR BARBARIN, of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a certain new and Improved Metallic-Band Fastener, or device for securing metallic bands on cotton and other bales, and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and letters of reference marked thereon.

The object of my invention is to produce a fastener formetallic bands of simple construction, which will hold the bands firmly and securely in place on the bale and yet permit the bands to be readily loosened without injury or damage to such fastener. To attain this object I employ a fiat piece of metal, curved and recessed so as to have a C shape. Upon the inner edge of 011e or both ends or arms of the plate, and at the mouth of the opening or recess formed therein, are formed projecting shoulders, with inclined or sloping faces, which serve to keep the ends of the bands, when secured in proper position, from slipping off said arms, as hereinafter described. A slot, curved so as to conform in a degree to the contour of the metal plate, may be formed in the plate, near one of its ends, and one or more holes or perforations are formed in the plate above or below the slot, according as the latter is nearer the upper or lower end of the fastener.

In the drawings which accompan y this speciiication I have fully illustrated my invention.

Figures l and 2 represent plan views of the metallic band-fastener.

In Fig. l, the fastener consists of a Clshaped piece of metal, A, of any desired size. Its upper end, B, at the mouth of the recess or opening m, is furnished with a projecting shoulder, b, with an inclined face, a, which slopes gradually toward the interior of the opening, for the purposes hereinafter mentioned.

The lower end, C, of the fastener has no projectin g shoulder, but in place thereof has eut or otherwise formed in it a slot, c, of suitable length, curved so as toV follow the outline of the opening m. Above the slot c a series of holes or perforations are made in the plate A.

The fastener in Fig. 2 is identical in most respects with that represented in Fig. 1. The only point ot' difference is that the slot c is not formed in the fastener, t-hc lower end, C, being provided, in lieu thereof, with a projecting shoulder, b', with an inclined face, af, which differs in no respect from the shoulder b on the upper arm, B.

The interior and opposite edges of the arms B and G are straight, and parallel, or nearly so, with each other. That part of the slot e which is formed in the arm O is also straight and parallel to the inner edge of the arm. The object in constructing these parts with straight edges is to give as muchbearing-surface as possible to the ends of the band when secured to the arms, as will now be described.

The fastener is used in the following manner: When the cotton or other article to be baled is under pressure the metal band which holds it together is passed around the bale, one end,j`, of the band D, Fig. 3, having first been inserted through the slot c of the fastener, and then secured to the fastener by being bent downward, so as to form a hook or loop. The end fmay be kept in this position by riveting it, if need be, to the band at 7c, care being taken that the loop thus formed shall be large enough to allow the end O of the fastener to slide freely therein. If the fastener shown in Fig. 2 be employed the end f of the band is bent over the arm G, and riveted as just described, the shoulder b in this case serving to keep the band in its position on the arm C.

After the band D has been tightly drawn around the bale its other end, g, is bent over the upper arm, B, of the fastener, as shown in Fig. 3, and, if deemed necessary, is riveted as above described, the loop thus formed, however, being of such size as to allow the arm B to be withdrawn therefrom when it is required to loosen the band. After the requisite number of bands have been thus secured around the bale it will be found, when the bale is taken from the press, that the fastener A holds the bands firmly and securely in place, as shown at M, Fig. 4. The end of the band which is bent around the upper arm, B, is prevented from slipping off by means of the shoulder b, while the other end, f, of the band is held by the shoulder b or in the slot c.

The construction of the fastener, both from its curvedform and the inclined faces of the shoulders b b', enables the Workman to loosen the bands easily and expeditiously. When it is desired to open the bale a hook or other suitable instrument is inserted in one of the holes, d, in the fastener when in position on the bale, as shown at M, Fig. 4. By pulling the hook in a downward direction when thus cngaged with the fastener the latter, on account of its curved form, is'caused to revolve or turn in the loop f, which, as above explained, is of from a bale with great ease and economy of time, and that the fastener itself may be used many times without being injured or rendered unfit for use. On some accounts I prefer the fastener provided with a slot, c, as shown in Fig. l, for under this arrangement the end j' of the band is held very rmly and securely to the fastener. But in most cases the fastener shown in Fig. 2 may be employed with equally good effect. The latter fastener also possesses this advantage over the other-i. el,

that either end of the fastenermay be disengaged from the band on account of the )rojecting shoulders I) b', with inclined faces a a', with which it is provided 5 whereas, in the former fastener but one end of the band can be disengaged therefrom in the manner described, the other being confined within the slot c.

The two forms of fastener may be combined, if desired, the arm C having both a projecting shoulder, b', and slot c; or both ends of the fastener may be provided with such shoulders and slots, the holes din this case being arranged between or by the sides of the slot.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The herein-described device for fastening metallic bands, the same consisting of a segmental plate recessed so as to have a C shape, and constructed and arranged for operation as set forth, so that the partial revolution of the plate shall effect the release or loosening of' the band, substantially in the manner herein specified.
