MAlL-POUCH CRANE.

SPECIFICATION forming part oi Letters Patent No. 585,673, dated July 6, 1897. Application filed December 2,1896. Serial No. 614,213. (No model.)

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LUDOVIC E. HUNT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Somerset, in the county of Pulaski and State of Kentucky,have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Mail-Pouch Cranes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention has reference to a novel construction in a mail-pouch crane, the object being to provide a simple and effective device of this kind; and it consists in the features of construction hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, illustrating this invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a crane constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the manner in which a passing train takes a pouch from a crane of this construction.

Referring now to said drawings, 1 indicates a suitable arm mounted upon upright supports 2 and between which it is pivoted. Mounted upon the post 3 is a spring 4:, that is adapted to come into contact with the lower end of this pivoted arm when the latter stands in an upright position or nearly so. The upper end of this arm 1 is provided with a head 5, and on its front and rear ends said arm is provided with cushions 6, conveniently consisting of springs. These cushions 6 come in contact with the post 3 when the arm is struck by a passing train.

The receiver for takin g the pouch from the train may consist of any suitable projection or cage upon a mail-car, as shown in the accompanying drawings.

In use the mail-pouch is placed on the upper end or head 5 of this arm, and the arm is placed in a slightly-inclined position-inclined toward the approaching train. The projection orcage upon the train in passing strikes one of the cushions 6 and throws the arm forcibly in the other direction, so that the mail-pouch resting on the other end thereof drops into the cage, which can then bethrown into the mail-ear. It will be seen, therefore, that all shocks and jars are provided against and that the crane can be set to deliver mail to a train approaching from either direction.

The device is simple and inexpensive and will effectually deliver the pouch placed thereon.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a device of the kind specified, a pivoted arm provided with cushions, and a frictional device for holding said arm in an upright position, substantially as described.

2. In a device of the kind specified, a post provided with a spring, a pivoted arm having its lower end adapted to engage said spring when said arm stands in an upright position,

a head upon said arm, and cushions upon the sides of said arm, substantially as described.
