WINDOW- SCREEN.
SPECIFIGATION' forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,671, dated July 6, 1897.
Application filed July 21, 1896- Sarial No. 600,030. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HALsEY, J12, a citizen of the United States, residing at Afton, in the county of Morris and State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVindoW-Screens; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to window-screens.
My object is to provide an improved window-screen of novel construction which can be quickly and easily applied to the frame or casing and when in position will be adapted to support the upper sash and will allow the lower sash to be moved up or down at pleasure.
Afurther object is to provide a simple and cheap window-screen which after being applied to the window frame or casing can be locked so that it will constitute, as it were, a fixed lower sash, but will be adapted to allow the lower sash of the window to be raised or lowered, as desirable, and will in no wise interfere with the use of the window.
The invention consists of certain novel features and combinations, appearing more fully in detail in the following description and ap pended claim and the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a windowframe casing equipped with my improved sash and looking toward the inner face of the casing; Fig. 2, a view in elevation looking toward the outside of the frame; Fig. 3, a perspective detail View of the screen and strips, which are shown separated, but in relative arrangement; and Fig. Al, a vertical sectional view with the screen out of place, but showing the means for fastening the same in the window-casing.
Numeral 1 designates an ordinary window frame orcasing, and 2 and 3 the upper and lower sashes, respectively. A dog or catch 1 is pivoted to the window-frame and adapted to hold the lower or inner sash in raised position.
My improved screen is designated by the numeral 4. If preferable, this screen can be provided with a vertical centrally-disposed strip 5, so that it is divided into two portions,
which are covered by a single piece of netting 6. It is not necessary that this central strip be employed. The screen is provided wit-h a knob or finger-grasp '7, so that it can be readily raised.
The numerals 8 and 9 designate guidestrips which are connected to the sides of the frame and are adapted to engage with other strips, to be described hereinafter, and which are located in the window frame or casing.
The numerals l0 and 11 designate thin guide-strips which lie in the grooves in which the upper and outer sash is adapted to slide.
The numeral 12 designates an upper locking-strip which extends across the windowcasing and lies immediately under the upper sash. This locking-strip is provided with a rabbet 13, which receives the upper end of the screen, and it is cut away at its ends into respective pockets 14 and 15, which receive the upper ends of the side guide-strips that lie in the sides of the casing.
The numerals 16 and 17 designate two ears or lugs which are connected to the lockingstrip and project from the upper portion of the frame of the screen, so that the latter is locked against being pushed in or out of the window-casing.
The lower locking-strip is designated by numeral 18. This is provided at its ends with flanges 19 and 20, that project into the guide-grooves in which the upper sash slides and are also raised slightly above the strip, so that they will prevent the screen from being pushed out of the window.
The numerals 21 and 2:2 designate buttons, which are pivoted to the lower locking-strip, and after the screen has been placed in position these buttons are pressed up against its lower portion,so that it is also prevented from being pushed inwardly.
WVhen the screen, the guide-strips, and the locking-strips are all in position, the screen is held firmly locked against being pushed either out or in and it supports the upper sash, but allows the inner sash to be raised or lowered, as desirable.
WVhenever necessary, the locking-strips,the guide-strips, and the screen can be quickly and easily removed from the casing and they can be readily replaced therein whenever desirable.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a Window-screen, the combination with 1 an upper locking-strip provided with a rabbet and having lugs which overhangthe said 5 rabbet and also provided with pockets at its ends, which ends are received in the windowframe grooves, of a lower locking-strip having flanges at itsends whichproject both upwardly and outwardly from said ends and which flanges are alsoreceivedinthe windowframe grooves, 'fasteningbuttons on said, lower locking-strip, a frame comprising the screen proper, which :fra-m c has vertically disi posed guide-strips securedio one side thereof and projecting out laterally from its ends and'the frame having its upperedge received in the rabbet of the upper locking-strip and held by the lugs and its lower edge resting on the lower locking-strip and held against the end flanges thereof by the buttons, and indei pendentde tachable.side guide-strips fitted in the grooves of the window-frame and lying against the ends of the screen-frame and the projecting portions of the guide-strips thereof, and said guide-strips having their upper ends received in the pockets of the upper locking-strip and their lower ends resting :against the projecting portions of the flanges and the lower locking-strip.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of =two'subscribo i-ng witnesses.
