Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEroEK ISAAC T. GREEN, OF MILFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND C. H. BERRY, OF FORT GREEN PLACE, BROOKLYN, NEINT YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAT-PRESSING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,5114, datcd October 2, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC T. GREEN, of Milford, New Haven county, State ot' Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvenient inPressing Hats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a vertical central section of this invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same, the line Fig. l, indicating-the plane of section.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention consists in the application of steam to the hat while the same is in place between the presser and the die, in such a manner that by the action of the steam the material from which the hat is made is kept soft and pliable, and said hat assumes the correct shape.
It consists, also, in the employment or use of a wet sheet in combination with the presser and die, in such a manner that by the action of the heated presser on the wet sheet the moisture from said sheet is expelled in the form of steam, and the material from which the hat is made is kept soft and pliable while being pressed.
It consists, further, in the use of a perforated shield in combin ation with the wet sheet, the presser, and die, in such a manner that the steam formed by the action of the presser on the wet sheet is brought in uniform contact with the hat, the steam being allowed to pass through the perforated shield without obstruction.
It consists, further, in'makin g the perforated shield thicker at the bottom than at the top, so that by introducing the presser the requisite pressure at the sides is obtained, said presser being made wedge-shaped to facilitate its introduction into the shield.
A represents the die, and B the presser, which are both made of iron or other suitable material, in the proper form and shape to correspond to the shape of the hats to be pressed.
The die is so arranged that it.ean be heated with steam or hot air, and after the hat to be pressed has been adjusted in the same I iii-- troduce a perforated shield, C, which is made tapering, being thicker at the bottom than at thetop, so that when the presser B is introduced a uniform pressure toward all sides is effected. The presser B is also made tapering or wedge-shaped, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings, so that it can be readily introduced in the shield and that its shape corresponds to that of said shield.
While the operation of pressing is going on, or while the hat is between the presser and the die, I introduce ajet of steam; or, instead of this, I apply a wet sheet, D, between the presser and perforated shield. y
The presser, being heated, transforms the moisture contained in the wet sheet into steam as the operation of pressing progresses, and the requisite amount of steam is generated to keep the material from which the hat is made soft and pliable. The steam thus generated passes readily through the perforated shield.
3y these means I am enabled to press a hat with ease and facility, and to give it the proper form or sha-pe without trouble or loss otl time.
W/hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The application of steam to the hat while the same is in place between the presser' and the die, as and for the purpose described.
2. The employment of a wet sheet, in combination with the die and presser, while the operation of pressing a hat progresses, substantially as and for the purpose set' forth.
3. The perforated shield C, in combination with the presser and die, substantially as and for the purpose described. Y
4. The perforated shield C and wet sheet D, in combination with the presser and die, as set forth.
5. Making the perforated shield tapering or thicker at the bottom, as and for the purpose described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 24th day of March, 1866..
ISAAC T. GREEN.
