Description
J. L. WEAVER, or
'IATES PATENT DAVIS, ILLINOIS.
HVIPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. L. VEAVER, of Davis, in the county ot Stephenson and State ot' Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that thet'ol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part ot this specitica-tion, in Which- Figure l is avertical longitudinal section of lny improved washing-machine, taken through the line x, Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is a side View of the same. Fig. 3 is a top view of the same.' Fig. 4 is a vertical cross section of the same, taken through the li'ne y y, Fig. 3.
Similar letters of `reference indicate like parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved washing machine, by the use of which the time, labor, and expense expended in washing clothes may all be diminished; and it consists ota machine constructed and operated as hereinafter more fully described.
Aare the supports upon which the machine rests, and to which the side boards are atcached and the top frame hinged. B and C are the side boards ot the box or trough in which the washing 'is done. These side boards are attached to the supports A. D and E are the bottom boards of the box, which meet in the middle part of the box, at the lower edge ot' the side boards, B and C, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4. From this lowest point they incline upward toward the ends of the box, as shown in Fig. 1, terminating near the upper edge of the side boards, B and C. F is an end board, attached to the bottom board, E, and to the side boards, B and O, and having its upper edge even with the top of lthe frame G II l, as seen in Fig. 1. The longitudinal.arms Gr and H of this frame are hinged to the rear end ot' the side boards, B and C, or to the supports A.
The cross-piece I ot' the frame is inclined, but at a steeper-inclin ation than the bottom boards, D and E, and has its lower edge beveled to correspond with the inclination of the bottom board, D, as shown in Fig. I. To the middle part of the longitudinal arms G and H of the top frame is attached the roller-frame J K L, which carries the pressure-rollers M and N.
The upper and larger roller, M, revolves in bearings in the upright pieces of the frame, as shown in Fig. 4. One'end ot the axle to which the said roller is attached extends out through a slot in the side board, B, and to it is attached a crank,0,for operating the machine. To the other end of said axleis attached a cog-wheel, P, which meshes into a cogwheel,R, attached to the end of the axle of the roller N, as shown in Fig. 4. The bearings S of the roller N work in slots formed in the lower end of the uprights J and L, as shown, and are supported by the links or bars T, which pass up through the uprights J and L, and over the ends of the short arms ot' the levers U. These levers are formed so as to have a downwardly-projecting part or fulcrum on the cross-piece K of the roller-frame, and their long arms project over the side edges of the box, as shown.
V are elastic ropes or bands, one end of each of which is attached to the top of the machine,
as shown in Fig. 4. These ropes or bands. pass thence over pulleys, or their equivalent, att-ached to the ends ot' the long arms of the 1evers U, as shown; thence they pass down along the sides ot" the machine, and terminate in rings W, and are secured in place by slipping these rings over pins placed in proper position upon the sides ot' the machine, as seen in Figs. 2 and 4.
X are rollers revolving in bearings in the strips A', attached to the sides otl the box, as shown in Fig. 3. These rollers may be of any desired number, and at least one of them should be so placed as to guide or feed the clothes to the rollers M and N. Around these rollers passes the apron, the ends of which may be attached to each other by lacing, or in any other convenient manner.V This apron is formed of two or more strips of cloth, B', the spaces between them being occupied by cords G, or their equivalent, for the purpose of allowing a free circulation of the water or soapsuds during the operation. The apron is kept extended by strips D of brass or other suitable inaterial, to -which the strips of cloth B and the cords C are attached.
E are strings extending across the apron from edge to edge, by means ot which the clothes to be washed are connected to the apron, to be carried through the machine. To the Y longitudinal arms G H ofthe top frame, near their forward ends, are pivoted rods F', which pass down along the side of the machine, as
shown in Fig. 2, and are pivoted to the ends ofthe levers Gr' and H', which levers have their fulcrum upon the rod I', which passes through supports descendin from the body of the machine, as shown. The lever H' is i11- clined, so as to meet and connect with the lever Gr', as shown in Fig. l, for convenience in operating them simultaneously. By depress ing the free end of the lever Gr', the forward end of the top frame, G H I, is raised, lifting the rollers M and Nfrom the apron and slackening it, so that the clothes can b e more readily connected with or removed from the said apron.
In using the machine the elastic ropes or bands V allow the rollers M and N to separate for the passage of thicker parts of the clothes, and yet at all times maintain a sutlicient pressure to do the required work.
The clothes being attached to and removed from the apron above the surface ofthe water, I am able to use boiling water, or rather I wash the clothes while boiling, thus saving much time, and requiringless soap than when other machines are used.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination ot' the frame GH I with the side and end boards ot the washingfmachine, and with the roller-frame J K L, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the roller-framed K L with the side boards, B andG,and with the pressure-rollers M and N, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The levers U, constructed as described, in combination with the links or bars T, the cross-piece K of the roller-frame, and the elastic rope or bands V, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
fl. The combination and arrangement of the rods F', levers Gr' H', with the top Jframe, G H I, substantially as described, and for the pun pose setforth.
