Description

(No Model) J. H. YEARSLEY.
BRUSH HOLDER FOR DYNAMOS.
No. 584,912. Patented June 22,1897
IhvrTirn STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES II. YEARSLEY, OE PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO ROBERT N. SIMPERS AND ROBERT N. SIMPERS, TRUSTEE, OF SAME PLACE.
BRUSH HQLDER Fee DYNAMQS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,912, dated June 22, 1897.
Application filed April 8,1397. Serial No. 631,208. (No model.)
T at whom, [it may concern; tion and illustrating the same applied to two Be it known that I, JAMES ll. YEARSLEY, a brushes. Fig. 2 is a side elevational View of citizen of the United States, residing at the the same, the right-hand end of the holder city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philabeing partly sectioned and having certain delphia and State of Pennsylvania, have inparts removed for the purpose of more clearly vented certain newand useful Improvements illustrating the invention; and Fig. 3 is a in Brush-Holders for Dynamo-Electric Macross-sectional view of the holder and of a chines, of which the following is a specificaportion of the commutator.
tion. Referring to the drawings, A represents 10 My invention has relation to a holder for the commutatorof a dynamo-electro machine the brush of a dynamo or similar electric maof the ordinary type, and 13 represents a box chine in which the carbon or other material or holder for the brushes a, which boX is also of which the brush is made must be pressed of the usual construction and may be held in closely against the commutator to prevent operative position with respect to the com 1 5 sparking, and in such connection it relates mutator by the frame B or in any well-known 6 5 particularly to the construction and arrangemanner. The box B is centrally apertured ment of such a holder. or recessed, as at b, and in this recess the The principal obj ect of my invention is to brush a is adapted to enter and from which it provide in a brush-holder a feeding or pressis adapted to project against the commutator 2o ing device for the brush, by means of which A, substantially as illustrated in Fig. 3. From the brush is held closely and with a uniform one side of the box B projects a bracket Z), pressure upon the surface of the commutator, to which is pivoted, as at 6 two arms 61, exso that all sparking or tendency to sparking tending over and down upon the upper end is avoided. f the brush a. These arms cl are united to 2 5 To this end my invention consists in a gether by a cross-piece or bridge (1. brush-holder wherein the brush is adapted to Through the bridge cl extends a screwbe fed and in which the brush is pressed tothreaded pin or bolt (1 one end of which is ward the commutator by means of two hinged secured to a spring e, which spring is also se or pivoted arms each adapted to rest at or cured to the box, as at e. The other end of 30 near the sides of the brush, said arms being the pin or bolt d projects through the bridge united by a bridgepiece through which is d and is adapted to receive adjusting and adapted to pass a threaded pin or bolt, one jam nuts (1 and d, which when advanced end of said pin orbolt being under tension of on the pin or bolt d increase the tension of a spring and the other end passing through the spring 0, and thereby, through the bridge 3 5 the bridge and adapted to receive one or more d and arms (Z, increase the pressure brought 8 5 adjusting-nuts, whereby the tension of the upon the upper end of the brush a and serve spring is brought directly upon the bridge to force said brush into closer engagement and transmitted equally therethrough to each with the commutator A. The brush a by arm. preference is reinforced or strengthened by 40 My invention further consists in a brushthe side plates f, united to each other and go holder for dynamos constructed and arranged clamped against the brush by means of a bolt in substantially the manner hereinafter deor bolts f. scribed and claimed. By the arrangement above described it will The nature and scope of my invention will be readily understood that the pressure ex 4 5 be more fully understood from the following erted upon the brush is evenly distributed on 5 description, taken in connection with the acits upper surface, and hence the brush is held companying drawings, forming part hereof, firmly and evenly upon the commutator A in whichand sparking or tendency to sparking is re Figure l is a top or plan ViCW of a brush duced to minimum. As the pressure of 50 holder embodying main features of my iuveir the spring 0 is not exerted directly upon the arms d or any one of said arms, but upon the cross-piece or bridge (1, which is practically integral with both arms, it is obvious that each arm will always be under a constant and uniform pressure and neither arm can press with more or less force upon the brush.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a brush-holder for dynamos, a box in which the brush is adapted to be fed toward the commutator, two arms pivoted at one end to the box and having their free ends resting upon the brush, a cross-piece or bridge uniting said arms, and a spring adapted to depress said bridge toward the box, whereby the arms are caused to press upon the brush with a constant and uniform pressure substantially as described.
2. I11 a brush-holder for dynamos, a box in which the brush is adapted to be fed toward the commutator, two arms pivoted at one end to said box and having their free ends resting upon the brush, a cross-piece uniting said arms, a threaded pin passing through said cross-piece, a spring seeuringone end of said pin orbolt to thebox, and adjusting and jam nuts adapted to advance and retract on said pin through the cross-piece, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES H. YEARSLEY.
