SHAFT OR POLE COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,689, dated June 15, 1897.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH E. KIBBE, FE- LIX J. RICHARD, and ARVILLIAN THERIOT, citizens of the United States, and residents of Erath, in the parish of Vermilion and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaft or Pole Oouplings; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to couplings for the shafts and poles of vehicles; and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same, whereby they may be readily attached to and detached from an axle without the necessity of removing any bolts, thus effecting a great saving in time and labor.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a pair of vehicleshafts and an axle constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a detail side elevation showing the shafts as they appear when in use. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the shafts elevated to detach them from the axle. Fig. 4 is a plan view.
In the said drawings, the reference-numeral 1 designates the axle of a carriage, wagon, or other vehicle of any ordinary or suitable construction, provided near each end with a clip 2, formed with a forwardly-projecting lug 3, having its end provided with a pin 4., projecting at a right angle thereto.
The numeral 5 designates the shaft, connected together by a cross-bar 6 and having secured at the inner ends the thills 7, formed with apertured lugs 8 to receive the pins 4:. The thills are provided with upwardly-curved arms or hooks 9 at a sufficient distance therefrom to allow the lugs 3 to pass therebetween. In rear of each of said pins and secured to the lugs 3 is an arm 10, formed with a lug 11 at the free end, the lug 3 being formed with a recess 12 at the inner end of the arm.
The numeral 13 designates a spring for pre venting rattling, consisting of a metal plate tical position, when the ends of the hooks 9 will be below the lugs 3, so that by a lateral movement of the shafts the pins 4 will pass through the apertures 8, as seen in Fig. 3. The shafts are then lowered, when the arms 9 will ride up beyond the lugs 3, as seen in Fig. 2, when the shafts cannot be detached until again elevated and the operation reversed. The spring 13, when the shafts are attached to the axle, bears against the lugs 3 and by their tension prevents rattling.
To remove the shafts for any purposesuch, for instance, as to substitute a pole thereforthe above operation is reversed, and the pole, which is provided with a crossbar at its ,inner end, to which the lugs and arms are secured, is connected with the axle in the manner first above described.
By the above means'the shaft or pole can be connected with and disconnected from the axle in a rapid manner, yet when the same are attached to the axle they will be securely held in place without any liability of accidental disengagement.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim is- The combination with the clips, the forwardly-projecting lugs, the pins projecting at right angles thereto, and the arms secured to the lugs having lugs at their free ends, of the shafts, the thill-irons formed with apertured lugs with which said pins engage, the curved arms or hooks secured to said thill-irons and the bent springs formed with ears which engage with the lugs 011 the arms secured to the clip-lugs, substantially as described.
