0. H. SCOTT. TAILORS MEASURE.
Patented June 15, 1897.
1 Y UNiTnn ST T-us PATENT FFICEo CHARLES II. SCOTT, OF BLOOMINGTON, ILLINOIS.
TAILO RS M EASU RE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,413, dated June 15, 1897.
Application filed August 17,1896. Serial No. 603,001. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES II. SCOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomington, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Meas uring Squares for the Use of Tailors and Garment-Cutters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an adjustable measuring-square for the use of tailors and garment-cutters; and the object of the invention is to provide an improved frame which may be adjusted to the human body and held in a perpendicular and horizontal position and provided with tape lines or measures,wh ereby accurate measurements of the body may be made for cutting out vests and coats, so as to insure an accurate and perfect fit.
The invention consists, essentially, of a frame or square consisting of a back piece, provided with a horizontal side bar adapted to fit under one of the armpits, an adjustable bar slidable on said back piece adapted to fit under the other armpit, a perpendicular or Vertical adjustable bar working on the stationary side bar, and all of said bars graduated or formed with a scale, a belt secured to said vertical bar for securing the frame or square in position on the body, tape-measures secured to said bar, and a spirit-level secured to said bar and to the back bar, hereinafter fully described and claimed. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved square, illustrating it applied to the human body, which is shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the square, looking from the rear.
In thesaid drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates a rectangular bar, graduated or formed with a scale, to one end of which is secured a horizontal bar 2 at right angles thereto, adapted to fit under one of the armpits. VVorking on this bar 1 is a slide 3, to which is secured a graduated or scale bar 4, which is adapted to fit under the other armpit. By adjusting the slide on the bar 1 the square can be fitted to difierent-sized bodies. The front end of the bar 2 passes through an aperture in a vertical graduated bar 5, which is slidable or adjustable thereon. Near the lower end the bar 5 is provided with a belt 6 for securing the frame to the body and is also provided with two tape-measures 7. Tapemeasures 8 are also secured to the said bar near the upper end thereof.
Secured to bar 5 is a spirit-level 9 for determining when the square is level, and the rear or back bar 1 is also provided with a similar level 10, which will show whether one shoulder of the person being measured is higher than the other.
In using the device the bars 2 and 4 are passed beneath the armpit and secured in a horizontal position by means of the belt.
By use of this instrument and the tapelines secured thereto points on measurements can be located so that the garments when out and made will fit accurately and perfectly, the advantage of which will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention pertains.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is V In a tailors square, the combination with the graduated back bar, the graduated side bar fixed to one end thereof at a right angle thereto, and an adjustable graduated side bar movably arranged on the back bar parallel to the fixed side bar; of an adjustable vertical bar movable on said fixed side bar, and extending above and below the latter, a belt secured to said vertical bar near its lower end, tape-measures attached to said vertical bar, and spirit-levels secured to said vertical and back bars.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES H. SCOTT.
IVitnesses:
ORLENA BLooMFIELn, JOHN A. STERLING.
