i IMPROVED BEDSTEAD-FASTENING.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,437, dated October 2, 1866 .To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN LEMMAN, of Oincinnati, Hamilton county, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bedstead-Fasteners, of which the following is a full and clear description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specifcatio My invention relates to an improved inode of fastening a device to a bedstead-post to receive the rails.

Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my improved fastener in its place in a bedstead-post. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the femalepart of the fastener embodying my improvement, showing` the shape of the piece. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the fastener, taken centrally, showing the plane of the side flanges. Fig. 4 represents a side view, a moditid form of my improved bedstead-fastener, located in the post. Fig. 5 is a transverse section of my modified improvement taken in the plane l 2.

A is a bedstead-post, to which is secured my improvement, the female part of the fastener B, which is an open box of metal. The sides b flare outward and continue roundA the lower end, b', of the box, where the flare is the greatest. The post A is mortised to receive the female part B. B has slots O, which receive the lugs of any common male fastener as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the sides are vertical and their edges straight from the feather-edge 4to the Opposite end; also, anges e project eX- ternally from the edges. They t into grooves in the sides of the mortise in posts A. In placing the female part B of the bedsteadfastener in the mortise in postA the lower circular end, b, is inserted in the upper end of the mortise in post A. The iiare Vof side b secures the female part B to post A without the use of screws. It is readily removed without the use of instruments. In the modified form the ed ges b may be straight, an dexterior iianges c may be made to answer in pla-ce of the flare, as shown in fe'male part B.

Having described my improved fastening, its application and utility, I make the following claim 4 Inserting in a bedstead-post a segment of circle B, in a mortise with beveled sides and lower end, for the purpose of securing it to the post A without anyother fastening, substantially as described and set forth.
