UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
lVILLIAM A. PEAK, OF EXETER, ILLINOIS.
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,134, dated June 8, 1897.
Application filed March 12, 189 7. Serial No. 627,083. (No model.)
To all 1111710111, in may! concern:
Be it known that I, TILLIAM A. PEAK, a citizen of the United States, residing at EX- eter, in the county of Scott and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chorus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in churns; and the objects are to provide a churn which will permit ready access to all of its parts for purpose of cleaning and removal of the butter, which will be of simple, durable, and inexpensive construction, and which will be thoroughly efficient and practical.
To attain the desired objects, the invention consists of a churn embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, sub stantially as disclosed herein.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved churn with the parts in position for operation. Fig. 2 represents a similar View with the mechanism exposed or the churn opened, and Fig. 3 represents a detail view.
In thedrawings, the numeral 1 designates the casing in which is arranged the butter receptacles or vessels 2, and in the bottom of the casing are the discharge-channels 3 for draining off the buttermilk. The vessels fit tightly upon the bottom of the casing over the discharge-channels 3 and are plugged or closed. \Vhen desired to drain oft the buttermilk, the plugs are removed and the buttermilk passes off, as is evident. The casing is provided with the sectional lid, which consists of the two hinged end sections i and the central hinged section 5, adapted to be retained in closed position by the hook-andcatch fastening 6, and which is further provided with the pivoted catches 7 for retaining the end sections down when the churn is in use. Upon the central hinged section is mounted the framework 8, in which is journaled the shaft 9, provided with the crank 10 and carrying the gear-wheel 11, which meshes with the pinion 12 on the counter-shaft 13. The counter-shaft 13 carries the disks 14, with which are eccentrically connected the pitmen or links 15, which have their other ends connected to the vertically arranged dashershafts 16, which carry the dashers 17 at their lower ends and have their upper ends guided by the guide-frame or cross-piece 18.
From this construction it is evident that when motion is transmitted to the drivingshaft the dashers are moved vertically with great rapidity, and the churning of the butter is thereby effected in a rapid and thorough manner. a
The particular feature of advantage about my churn is that it permits ready and easy access to the butter, and the operating mechanism is all carried by the central hinged section of the cover, the whole structure forming a simple, compact, and thoroughly practical churn.
I claim- A churn consisting of a rectangular casing having the discharging-channels, the butterreceptacles arranged in the casing, the hinged end and central sections forming the cover, said end sections opening laterally and the central section transversely, the pivoted catches carried by the central section for holding the end sections, the framework carried by the central hinged section and consisting of the standards having guides, the driving mechanism mounted in the framework, the
eccentrics operated by the driving mechan-
