FREDERICK J. \VEBER, OF CONNERSVILLE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO THE STEEL STORAGE AND ELEVATOR CONSTRUCTION COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
TAN K-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,068, dated SunelS, 1897.
Application filed March 1, 1897. Serial No. 625,613. (No model.)
To otZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK J. WEBER,
of Connersville, Fayette county, Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tank-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains for tanks, and the improvements will be readily understood from the following description, taken inconnection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tank provided with my improved cover; Fig. 2, a plan of the same with half of the roofing portion of the cover removed, and Fig. 3 a vertical dianietrical section of tank and cover.
In the drawings, 1 indicates the tank, of cylindrical form and having its walls formed of any desired material, being plate metal in the example; 2, an outwardly-projecting flange at the rim of the wall of the tank; 3, the roof portion of the cover, 0t circular plan, with its periphery resting upon the flange 2, this roof portion being crowning or higher in the center, the illustration showing the roof portion as forming the fiat frustum of a cone formed by tapering plates riveted together at their edge, their narrower ends reaching not entirely to the center of the roof; 4, a crownplate rigidly secured at the center of the roof portion of the cover and closing the opening formed by reason of the fact that the sheets forming the main portion 3 do not extend clear to the center of the roof; 5, a strut havin g its upper end in engagement with crownplate 4, the lower end. of this strut projecting to covers or roofs downwardly axially of the tank to a point below the rim of the tank; 6, a horizontal plate secured to the lower end of strut 5; 7, rods having their inner ends secured to plate 6 and having their outer ends engaging the rim of the tank, these rods being arranged in circumferential series and projecting radially from plate 6 to the rim of the tank and inclining upwardly from the plate to the rim; 8, a turnbuckle in each of rods 7, serving as means for adjusting the lengths of the rods, and 9 heads or nuts on the outer ends of rods 7 exterior to the tank.
The cover rests upon the rim of the tank and is supported thereby at its periphery, the rods and strut forming a circular truss supporting the center of the cover, the rods also staying the rim of the tank, and, While supporting the center of the roof, serving to keep the rim of the tank in circular shape.
I claim as my invention- In a tank-cover, the combination, substantially as set forth, of a tank-wall cylindrical in plan, a flange at the rim thereof, a crowning roof with its periphery resting upon said flange, a crown-plate secured at the center of said crowning roof, a strut projecting downwardly from said crown-plate, a, horizontal plate secured to the foot of said strut, and a series of rods connected with said plate at the foot of said strut and projecting radially into engagementwith the rim of the tank-wall.
FREDERICK J. WEBER.
