PATENT NON-REFILLABLE BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 584;,0d8, dated June 8, 1 897. Application filed September 17, 1896. Serial No. 606,115. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. PAPOUN, a citizen of the United States, residing at laker City, in the county of Baker and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Refillable Botupper end thereof, a circumferential groove on the outside of said neck, and a recess or groove on the inner surface of the extension of said-neck, forming a shoulder at the upper end of the neck, and a second shoulder just above it on said extension, a cork adapted to fit within the opening in said neck, a stopper having ahead upon its upper end adapted to fit within the opening in said extension and rest upon the shoulder at the upper end of said neck, provided with sockets in its outer surface, a spring adapted to embrace said stopper having balls or knobs on the ends thereof which are adapted to fit within the sockets in said stopper and to spring outward] y and engage the shoulder at the upper end of said extension when the stopper is in I also employ, in connection with the foregoing parts, an inclosing cap adapted to cover the upper end of said stopper and the neck of the bottle to preventthe accidental breakage of the bottle during the handling or shipping of the same.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accom panying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal sectional view through a bottle constructed according to my invention, showing the same in its corked and sealed condition. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the stopper, and Fig 3 is a similar view of the spring fitting within said stopper.

The bottle 1 has a contracted neck 2 with an extension 3 at the upper end thereof formedintegral therewith. On the outside of the neck of the bottle 1, between the neck proper, 2, and the extension 3, is formed a circumferential groove 4, as clearly shown. On the inside of the extenson 3 is a circular recess 5, forming a shoulder 6 at the upper end of the neck and a similar shoulder 7 just opposite thereto on the extension 3. The opening in said extension is slightly larger than the openingin saidneck. Fitting within the neck proper, 2, is a cork S of ordinary construction, provided for the usual purpose. Fitting Within the extension 3 just above the cork S is a stopper 9, which is generally cylindrical in form, with a cap 10 upon its upper end. The said stopper is formed with two oppositely-disposed sockets or recesses 11 11, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Embracing the stopper 9 is aspring 12, which has balls or knobs 13 13 upon each end thereof which are adapted to fit within the sockets or recesses 11 in said stopper and to spring outwardly into engagement with the shoulder 7 when the stopper is in its seat. hen the bottle has been filled and is ready for shipping, I place a protecting-cap lat over the upper end of the neck 2 and stopper 0 for the purpose of preventing the accidental breakage of parts while being handled.
The bottle is filled originally in the usual manner, and then the cork 8 is inserted in place inthe upper end of the neck 2. The stopper 9 is then applied, the spring 12 being first passed around said stopper and the balls or knobs 13 on the ends thereof being pressed by hand into the sockets or recesses 11. The lower end of the stopper rests upon the shoulder 6, and when in place the balls or knobs 13 spring outwardly into engagement with the annular shoulder'i. It is thus impossible to remove said stopper 9 without a breakage of the parts. Asa further precaution against accidental breakage the cap l l is then placed upon the upper end of the neck 2. In order to remove the contents of the bottle, the cap 14.- is first taken off, and then a sharp blow is given to the extension 3, breaking the same along the line of the circumferential groove 4: and disconnecting said extension from the neck proper, 2. The cork S is then removed in the usual manner and the liquor or other contents of the bottle poured off.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a bottle having an internal groove or recess in the upper end of the neck thereof, of a stopper therefor having sockets or recesses therein, a spring embracing said stopper having balls or knobs secured to the ends thereof which are adapted to be pressed inwardly into said sockets and to spring outwardly into said groove or re-- cess when said stopper is in its seat, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination with a bottle having a contracted neck, an extension upon the upper end thereof, a circumferential groove or weakened portion between said extension and said neck, and an internal circular groove or recess in said extension, of a cork fitting within the upper end of said neck, a stopper having a head upon its upper end and sockets or recesses in the sides thereof, a spring embracing said stopper, and balls or knobs secured to the outer ends of said spring adapted to be pressed into the sockets in said stopper and .to spring outwardly into said circular groove or recess, when said stopper is in its seat, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination with a bottle having a contracted neck, an extension upon the upper end thereof, a circumferential groove or weakened portion between said extension and said neck, and an internal circular groove or recess in said extension, of a cork fitting within the upper end of said neck, a stopper having a head upon its upper end and sockets or recesses in the sides thereof, a spring embracing said stopper, balls or knobs secured to the outer ends of said spring adapted to be pressed into the sockets in said stopper and to spring outwardly into said circular groove or recess when said stopper is in its seat, and an inclosing, protecting cap for the upper end of the neck of said bottle, substan* tially as and for the purpose described.
