srncmcnrxon forming part of Letters Patent 583,965, dated June 8, 1897.
' Application stale ate, 1896. ,Serial No. 603,605. (No model.)
. Be it known that I, WILLIAMHUGH Woon- QQCK, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 25-Auck1and Hill,
West Norwood, London, in the county of Sur rey, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in -Roller.Bearings, of which the'following isa specification,
"My intentionhasreference to improve ments' in roller-b earings, having for its object to diminish friction between revolving journals or shafts and their bearings; and it con- ,sists in the novel'eonstruction and combination-of the parts hereinafter fnllydescribed Fig. 2. Fig. 4 shows on the upper half a sectional plan on center line of a railway axle-box, the lower half being an outside plan on top. Fig. 5illustrates a cradle constructed according to my invention, suitable to cases where the rollers are inserted from the outside; and Fig. 6 is on the left half a cross-section on center line and on the right half a cross-section on line A B, Fig. 2, of a cradle suitable to cases where the rollers are inserted from the inside.
Referring to the drawings, a is the journal at the end of the axle of a railway-vehicle.
is the axle box or casing, preferably made of cast-steel. Y
die d, suitable to cases where the rollers are inserted from the outside of the cradle, and
k k in Fig. 6 are the similar bearing-surfaces suitable to cases where the rollers areinsert'ed from the inside'of the cradle.
What I claim is The combination, with a cylindrical axlebox provided with a circular rib f at its inner end, ofa journal arranged concentric with the axle-box, a cap secured tothe axle-box over the end of the said journal and provided with a circulanrib f, rollers arranged between the said journal and axle-box, and a cradle provided with end portions bearing against the said ribs'ff and preventingthe said rollers from moving endwise, said cradle also having spokes extending between the .said rollers and keeping them apart, substantially as set forth.
