SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 583,885, dated June 8, 1897.
Application filed December 18, 1895. Serial No. 572,529. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. BOOTH, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locomotive Engines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to locomotive-engines; and the object is to provide an engine of great power for drawing express or similar trains at high speed and in which the water and fuel carrying capacity is such as to allow for long runs without stopping for coal and water.
My invention consists principally in a large tender having driving-wheels and driving-engines receiving steam from the main engine.
It further consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter specified, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a locomotiveengine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic plan View thereof. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the tender, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged View of a flexible steam-pipe employed.
Referring to the'drawings, A designates the boiler of the main engine. A is the highpressure cylinder, and A is the low-pressure cylinder, each being supported on the truck in the usual manner and each having piston connection with the usual drive-wheels. The high-pressure cylinder receives steam from the boiler Athrongh the pipe at and exhausts through the pipe a into the low-pressure cylinder A which exhausts through the pipe a into the smoke-stack, thus utilizing the exhaust to increase the draft through the smokestack.
The tender B is mounted on the drivewheels I) and a truck b, and in order to get a large water and fuel carrying capacity the tender is projected laterally beyond and overhangs the drive-wheels and truck as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, particularly in the latter figure, and the tender may be made of a length substantially that of the main engine. By this construction the necessary weight will be obtained,notwithstanding the graduallessening of weight by the consumption of fuel and water.
To the truck 12' is attached a high-pressure cylinder B and a low-pressure cylinder B The high-pressure cylinder receives steam direct from the boiler A through a pipe 5 and exhausts through a pipe b into the lowpressure cylinder, which exhausts through a pipe 17 into the Water-tank, where this exhaust is condensed and serves to heat the water in the tank prior to its use in the boiler. The cylinders B B are connected to their drive-wheels in the usual manner.
The pipe 5 comprises a flexible connection B between the main engine and tender. This connection may consist of swivel-sections connected by ball-and-socket joints 19 as plainly indicated in the drawings. Of course the throttle-valve will be so arranged that steam will simultaneously flow through the pipes at b to the respective pairs of cylinders.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A locomotive comprising a main engine, a high-pressure cylinder located on the truck of the main engine and receiving steam direct from the boiler on the main engine, a lowpressure cylinder on the truck receiving the exhaust from the high-pressure cylinder and exhausting into the smoke-stack, a tender connected to the rear of the main engine, a high-pressure cylinder 0n the truck of the tenderreceiving steam direct from the boiler on the main engine and independently of the cylinders on the main engine, a low-pressure cylinder on the truck of the tender receiving the exhaust of the hi gh-pressurecylinder and exhausting into the water-tank on the tender and drive-Wheels for the tender arranged under the overhanging sides of said tender, substantially as specified.
