Description

UNITED STATES PATENT Dension.
, OASSIUS M. WERNER, OF ROOKFORD, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND i EDWIN A. BIGELOW, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSESHOES.
Specific-ation forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,355, dated September 25, 1866.
To dll whom it may concern.' Be it known that I, CASSIUS M. WERNER, otA Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State ot' Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Horseshoes; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear. and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part-ot this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation ot' a horseshoe having my improvement attached, and Fig. 2 is a rear View thereof. Fig. 5 is aview, in perspective, of my spring-clamp; and Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are views, in detail, ot' pai-ts of the same.
It is the object ot' my invention to securely fasten the horseshoe to the hoof without using nails 5. and to this end my invention consists in the construction of a band that shall carry projections to be let into the wall ot' the hoef, and which shall have shoulders a-t each end, to he tted into depressions in the rear ends of the shoe, while the front end ofthe band is held rigidly by a spring-clip fastened above the toe of the shoe.
The shoe A, with its toe B, calks O and O', and rigid clip D above the toe, is made in the usual manner, without being creased or punched for nails.
To the clip D, I rivet a spring-clip, E, on the outside of the shoe, and at a proper distance from the calks I form a slot as broad as the hand and as deep as the band is thick, and at the inner edge otl this slot, on the under side of the shoe, I sink depressions a a. (Shown in dotted lines'in Fig. l.) I now form a band, F,
of suitable strength to hold the shoe firmly to the hoot', the ends G and G of which terminate in a T shape, to match the slot and depressions a a in the shoe. The ends ot' the band are so curved, as at H, Figs. l, 2, and 3, as that when in place upon the hoof the larger portion of the band will be nearly parallel with the shoe. Inside of the band and at the bends near its ends I secure ribs J centrally, to be let into the wall of the hoof, and they project far enough from the band to give a secure hold when the band is in place. The bandis made turned down upon it, will hold the shoe se-A curely in place, While the turning up of the hook of the sprng-clip will permit the front of the band to be raised and the shoe removed.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination of the band F with the shoe A, constructed, arranged, and operating substantially in the manner described, for thc purpose set forth.
2. rIhe combination ot the ribs I with the band F, arranged and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
O. M. WERNER.
