B. L. BETTIS. CIGAR HOLDER.
No. 583,448. Patented June 1, 1897.
WITNESSES 1m: nonms Pawns-ca. morzrnmu. wAsHmoTou o c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT LEE BETTIS, OF LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS.
CIGAR-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,448, dated June 1, 1897.
A li ation fil d November 21,1896. Serial No. 612,918. (No model.)
To all? whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ROBERT LEE BETrIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Little Rock, in the county of Pulaski and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Holders, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to cigar-holders; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is designed to be held in the hand and which is simple in construction and operation, a further object being to provide a cigar-holder of the class specified with means for protecting the mustache or for preventing the same from being burned by the cigar.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which similar numerals of reference designate the same parts wherever found throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of my improved cigar holder with the mustache protector connected therewith; Fig. 2, a side view with the mustache-protector removed, and Fig. 3 a front view showing a modified form of protector.
In the practice of my invention I provide a cigar-holder which comprises an open springring 5, the ends of which overlap, as shown at 6, and each of said ends is provided with a ball or knob 7, one of which is at the side of the ring and the other directly over the vertical section thereof, and secured to the lower side of the ring 5 is a handle 8, which may be composed of any desired material and which may be connected with the ring 5 in any desired manner.
The ball or knob '7 is directly over the ring 5 and in line with the handle 8 and is provided with a detachable mustache-protector 9, which may be of any desired form and which is provided with a screw threaded shank 10, by which it is connected with said ball or knob, and in the form shown in Fig. 1 the protector 9 consists of two similar disks or plates which are circular in form and conneeted at their adjacent sides, and said device is adapted, when the holder is in use, to press upon the mustache and prevent the burning thereof.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a modified form of the protector 9, which consists of an elliptical plate provided with a circular opening 11, and this plate may be oblong in form, if desired.
My improved cigar-holder is well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended and is also comparatively inexpensive, and in practice the cigar is passed through the ring 5 by pressing the balls or knobs 7 together, and after said balls or knobs are released the spring-ring 5 will securely grasp and hold the cigar, and the device is held by the handle 8, or may be, as will be readily understood, and it is evident that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made Without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A cigar-holder having an open spring ring with overlapping ends, a ball on each of said ends, one of said ball-carrying ends being directly over the said ring, a handle secured to the lower part of said ring and a mustache-protector having a screw-threaded shank thereon, engaging said upper ball, said parts being combined substantially as described.
2. In a cigar-holder, a handle, an open ring mounted on one end thereof and having overlapping ends, balls on said ends, one of said balls being in line with said handle, a mustache-protector comprising two similar disks and a screw-threaded shank on said protector and engaging said ball in line with the said handle, said parts being in combination substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention 1 have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 16th day of November, 1896.
ROBERT LEE BETTIS. lVitnesses:
