IMPROVEMENT IN HOISTING APPARATUS.
Spcciication forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,340, dated September 25, 1866.
To all whom 'it muy conce'rri:
Be it known that I, DENNIS `FRrsBIE, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful,mprovementin the mechanism for shifting the load on the arms of cranes; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull,
clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- 4Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a side elevation ofthe shifting4 mechanism, and Fig. 3is a plan ofthe same.

My ,improvement relates to a device for shifting the load raised by the rope or chain of a crane from the post toward the outer eX- tremity of the arm, or vice versa, and the fol lowing description will enable a person versed in the art to construct the same.
A represents the posnt., and B the horizontal arm of the crane. The arm :is composed of two pieces of timber placed parallel to one another and havinga space left between them, the upper surface being made smooth.
C is the frame supporting the weight attached to the pulley P, and carrying the gearing by which it is actuated. This frame is supported upon four truck-wheels,D, which have flanges upon their inner sides and run upon the inner edges of the upper faces of the timbers forming the arm B. E is a pulley placed upon the overhung extremity of the shaft F, and is turned by the gearingchain E'. Upon the opposite extremity of the shaft I, also overhung, is placed a spur-wheel, G, geared into the spur-wheel H oli the extremity1 ofthe shaft I, the journals of which are on the center of the frame. The wheel H is larger than the wheel G when it is desired to increase the power. On the opposite end of the shaft Iis a pinion, K, working into the rack L, which is attached securely to the arm B. This arrangement of the gearing enables the operator by means of the gearing-chain EI4 to cause the frame C to traverse the arm B as desired.
The weight is suspended from astirrup, P
attached to the pulley P by rope or chain Q,
which is attached to the cross-piece at the end of the arm B. This chain is shown in blue on the drawings, and is carried over a pulley, M', suspended by hangers below the top ot' the arm B. These hangers form part of the frame (I. The chain Q is then carried under the pulleyP and over the pulley M, which corresponds to the pulley M. It is then carried over a pulley, O, attached to or near the post A, and thence to the hoistingapparatus. The weight being' suspended below the frame the latter is by it retained in place, and as the pulleys M and M are on each side of and equidistant from the middle of the frame C, the weight is equally distributed ou the four truck-wheels D As the pulleys M M and P `all turn freely, it follows that the frame-C, and with it the load,may be freely moved along the arm B as desired.
What I claim as my invention is- The traversing frame C when supported by the truck-wheels D running on the horizontal arm B of a crane, and moved by the pulley E through the spur-wheels G and H and pinion K and rack L, and bearing suspended the load, attached to the movable pulley P, from pulleys M and M', over which the chain Q passes, said several parts being arranged substantially as set forth.
