DEVICE FOR SPOOLING AND UNSPOOLING BARBED WIRE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,333, dated May 25, 1897.
Application filed March 2, 1896. Serial No. 581,520. No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MILLARD K. PHARISS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mount Vernon, in the county of Lawrence and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Spooling and Unspooling Barbed Wire; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,
which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to made an d use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to apparatus for reeling or winding barbed wire on spools and for unreeling the same in the manufacture of barbed-wire fences; and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same which shall possess superior advantages with respect to efficiency in operation.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a wagon, showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a central 1ongitudinal section of the wagon-body and the reeling and unreeling apparatus. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View of one of the bearing for the reel-shaft.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates the body of a wagon of any ordinary or suitable construction. 3 5 The numeral 2 designates a transverse bar secured to said body, to which are secured two bars 3 3, connected together at the front ends by a cross-bar l, which is secured to the tongue of the wagon. At the rear ends the bars 3 are provided with eyes 5, with which engage the hooked ends of a bow 6, provided at the center with a flaring sleeve '7', through which the wire passes in unreeling.
Pivoted to a cross-rod 8, secured to the bars 5 3, are two rearwardly-extending bars 9 9, converging toward each other and secured together at the rear ends. At said rear ends these bars are provided with curved dogs 10 for a purpose hereinafter described.
Secured to each bar 3, near the rear end, is
a plate 12, formed with a half-round groove. Secured to each plate is a quarter-round stationary box 13, and on the opposite side of said groove is a quarter-round box 14, provided with a slot 15, with which engages a screw-bolt 16, secured to bar 3 and provided with a nut 16. When these boxes are in place, they form a cylindrical bearing for the shaft 17 of a reel 18. This shaft is provided with a hub 19, having four radial arms 20 at each end at right angles to each other. The ends of the reel-shaft are made angular to receive a crank or cranks 21, by which the reel may be rotated.
The operation is as follows: In reeling the wire the wagon is stationary, and one end of the wire is made fast to the reel-shaft. The latter is now rotated by. the cranks, the wire passing around the reel from the top side thereof. In case of stoppage of the reel from any cause any tendency of the wire to un wind will be prevented by the barbs engaging the dogs 10. To unreel the wire in making a fence, the nuts which hold the boxes 14 are loosened and the latter slid back. The reel is then taken out and reversed or turned upside down, the wire now extending from the under side and passed through the sleeve in the bow and secured to a fence-post. The wagon is now driven along thefence-posts, So when the wire will be unreeled. During this movement of the wagon the dogs will rest on the wire and by frictional contact therewith will serve as a tension device, and owing to the forward slant of the dogs the barbs will slip under the same.
By making the reel removable and reversible it always turns in the same direction, whether reeling or unreeling.
Having thus fully described my invention, 0 what I claim is-- 1. In a wire reeling and nnreeling apparatus, the combination with the bars adapted to be connected with a wagon-body and the converging bars pivotally connected with said 5 bars and provided with curved dogs at the converging ends thereof, of the removable and reversible reel; substantially as described.
2. In a wire reeling and unreeling apparatus, the combination with the bars adapted I00 I to be secured to a wagon-body and having eyes at the rear ends, the bow having hooked ends engaging therewith, and provided with a flaring sleeve, the converging bars pivotally connected with said arms and the curved dogs, of the bearing-plates secured to said first mentioned bars, having semicircular grooves, the stationary quarter-boxes secured thereto, the movable slotted quarter-boxes,
10 the screw-bolts and the nuts engaging therewith, the removable and reversible shaft and reel; substantially described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
