S. W. WRIGHT.
PLOW.
N0. 583,296. PatentedMay 25,1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SYRUS VASHINGTON \VRIGHT, OF EDEN, ALABAMA.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,296, dated May 25, 1897.
Application filed fieptember 28, 1896. Serial No. 607,171, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SYRUs WASHINGTON \VRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, re, siding at Eden, in the county of St. Clair and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in plows, and has special reference to an improved stock and means by which it may be adj ustedthat is, raised or loweredas may be desired.
One object of myinvention is the provision of a means for lowering and raising the stock of a plow which is extremely simple, very durable and practical, and also very useful, and which can be very easily operated.
To attain the desired objects, m yinvention consistsof a plow embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a plow with my device applied, and Fig. 2 represents a central sectional view taken through the beam of the plow to more clearly show the details of construction.
Referring by numerals to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the plow-beam, and 2 the handle-standards carrying the handles, all of which are of any useful form. Secured to the beam by means of the bolt 3 is the standard or stock 4, which carries at its bottom the plow-points or shovels, as may be needed. This stock is made of one piece of metal and consists of the sides 5, which are of the shape of an S, so as to give the standard or stock more room to be raised or lowered, and the ends 6 of this stock are secured together by means of a rivet 7, which passes through the ends and the block 8, which is placed in between the end and to which the plow-point or shovel may be attached.- At the top 9 of this stock it will be noticed that it is broadened and that in its center there is a screw-threaded opening in which fits the screw or adjusting device 10, which consists of the handle 11 at the top end and the ball or knob 12 at the other end, which movably fits in the metal casing 13, sunken in and securedin the plow-beam by means of the metal plate 14:, which has an opening therein a trifle smaller than the knob or ball 12.
It will be noticed from the drawings and description that the stock or standard may be raised or lowered by simply turning the handle 11 of the adjusting device 10 and that the said standard or stock will be held in a rigid position while in use.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I provide an adjusting device which is very simple, durable, and inexpensive and which is very useful and practical and which will prove itself very eflicient for the intended purpose.
I claim l. The combination with the plow-beam consisting of two curved sides joined by a transverse head pivoted to the beam, a plowpoint carried by the lower ends of the standard, an adjusting device operating in the top of the standard and connected to the plowbeam, and consisting of the screw-threaded bolt or pin having the handle at its top and the ball or knob at its other end, and the easin ghaving the socket for the reception of said knob or ball secured in the beam of the plow; the whole being arranged so that when the handle is turned the standard tilts so as to raise or lower the plow-point. 2. The combination with the plow-beam, the casing fitting therein and formed with a socket, the bail-shaped plow-standard having the plow-point or shovel at one end, and the adjusting-screw passing through the other end and carrying the ball fitting in the socket of the casing, whereby the plow-carrier with its point may be adjusted as desired.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. SYRUS WASHINGTON WRIGHT.
