I/VALDRON SHAPLEIGH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE I/VELSBACII LIGHT COMPANY, OF GLOUCESTER CITY, NEW JERSEY.
WELSBACH OR OTHER MANTLE OR INCANDESCENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,092, dated. May 25, 1897.
Application filed March 24, 1897.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, VVALDRON SHAPLEIGII, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Velsbach or other Mantles or Incandescents, of which the following is a specification.
Mantles consist of earthy oXids, refractory materials, and the like, and when in condition for use present a whitish color and are fragile. Prior totransportation, manipulation, and marketing such lnantles are dipped in a protective coating, such as a solution of collodion, pyroXylin, dissolved guncotton, or other nitrocellulose compound or shellac, or both, or the equivalent of these agglutinants or binders, Which serve to prevent breakage and which are burned off prior to the use of the mantles. y
Purchasers and users of mantles desire to obtain them only from such makers and dealers as they elect, and by reason of the nature of mantles and of the presence of the protective coating it is practically impossible to distinguish those of one manufacture from those of another and from worthless imitations.
The principal object of my invention is to mark mantles in the hands of dealers in such way that any one can recognize them at a glance, while at the same time the marking disappears as soon as the mantle is burned off by the users or purchasers, so that its utility is not impaired, diminished, or interfered with.
My invention is embodied in a mantle or incandescent coated with coloring` matter adapted to burn Without residue and an inliammable agglutinant or binder or protective coating.
In the drawing I have shown a side elevational view of a mantle embodying features of my invention.
Serial No. 628,960l (No model.)
Referring to the drawing, a is a fragile mantle consisting of refractory materials. This mantle may be made by impregnating an organic body with refractory material and then expelling the organic substances. To the refractory and fragile mantle is applied a coating, Wash, or bath of an agglutinant and coloring-matter that will burn off or volatilize when the agglutinant is lighted Without leaving an appreciable residue. For this purpose the mantle may be dipped in a bath of the agglutinant (which may be a collodion with or Without shellac or other substance or material) and a destructible coloring-matter, as anilin dye or madder or their equivalents, which will burn off or volatilize without residue.
In use a mantle of my invention When in the hands of dealers presents a marked and distinguishing color, and such color is a reliable guide for purchasers as to the origin of the mantle, and a purchaser to enjoy the benefits of the mantle must iirst burn off the protective coating, with which disappears the coloring-matter after having performed its function, so that the mantle is left in proper condition for use and the purchaser is sure of its origin.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A mantle or incandescent combined with coloring matter or material, the nature of which is to burn off without leaving residue, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
WALDRON SHAPLEIGH.
In presence of- THos. A. JAMES, F. -I. MAoMoRRIs.
