SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,070, dated May 25, 1897.

Application filed February 4, 1897.

To all whont it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES HENRY MOLY- NEUX, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Halifax, in the county of Halifax and Province of Nova Scotia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to tobacco-pipes; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is so constructed that nicotine or fluids saturated with nicotine cannot flow through the mouthpiece of the stem into the mouth, a further object being to provide a pipe-stem which is provided with a longitudinal tube which is packed with asbestos wool or similar material, so as to break up and retard the flow of the smoke therethrough and to cool the same, said packing also serving to prevent dust and other substances from passing through the stem; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in the fol lowing specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, inwhich the separate parts of my improvement are designated by numerals of reference in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a central vertical longitudinal section of my improved pipe; and Fig. 2, a cross-section of the stem thereof, taken on In the practice of my invention I provide a tobacco-pipe having the usual bowl 5, provided with a stem 6, which is providedwith the usual longitudinal bore 7, which is enlarged for almost its entire length, so as to receive a tube 8, which is inserted from the outer end and which is filled with a packing 9, composed of mineral or asbestos wool or similar material, and the tube 8 is held in place by a screw-threaded coupling-piece 10, which is connected with the outer end of the stem and which is provided centrally thereof with an inwardly-directed annular shoulder or projection 11.

coupling-piece 10 preferably by means of a screw-threaded extension, as shown at 13, and said mouthpiece 12 is also provided with an upwardly directed or curved end extension 14, by means of which fluids and other substances are prevented from flowing outwardly through said mouthpiece, and the end of the mouthpiece is provided on its under side with a concave portion 15 and on its upper side with a corresponding concave portion 16, by which it may be better held in the mouth and from its shape take up but little space therein.

Formed in the bottom of the stem 6 and longitudinally thereof is a groove 17, which extends the full length of said stem and backwardly to the bottom of the bowl, and which communicates with a narrow port or passage 18 in the inwardly-directed annular shoulder or projection 11 of the coupling-piece 10, and this port or passage forms a communication between said groove 17 and the mouthpiece, and said groove is closed by a longitudinal slide 19, which is connected with the stem by a tongue-and-grooved joint, as shown at 20 in Fig. 2, and the rear end of said slide is provided with a depending tubular receptacle 21, and the mouthpiece 12 is connected with the coupling-piece 10 by means of an enlarged head 22, which is cylindrical in cross-section, and in practice the saliva and other fluids collect in this enlarged head of the mouthpiece and flow backwardly through the groove 17 and into the receptacle 21, and may be removed therefrom by removing the slide 19.

It will be apparent that the separate parts of the stem or the mouthpiece 12, the coupling-piece 10, and the tube 8 may be disconnected whenever desired, and all of said parts cleaned and again connected, and it will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation, and which is well adapted to produce the result for which it is intended.

The slide 19 only extends forwardly to the point indicated at 23, and said slide may be removed and cleaned whenever desired without reference to the other parts.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The herein-described pipe, which comprises a bowl, a stem provided with a central bore which communicates therewit-l1,the outer portion of said bowl being enlarged, and provided with a detachable tube which is filled with mineral wool or similar substance, and said stem being provided with a mouthpiece which is connected therewith by a collar, by which the tube is held in place, and the said stem being also provided with a longitudinal groove in the bottom thereof, which communicates with the mouthpiece, and which is closed by a longitudinally-movable slide at the rear end of which is a depending receptacle, substantially as shown and described.

2. As an improved article of manufacture, a tobacco-pipe comprising a bowl 5, having a stem 6, provided with a longitudinal bore 7, which is enlarged so as to receive a tube 8, said tube being provided with a suitable packing 9, composed of fibrous material, and held in place by a screw-threaded couplingpiece 10, which is provided with a shoulder 10, by ahead 22, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
