BATH TUB.
No. 583,066. I Patented May 25,1897.
' ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MORRIS O. MENGIS, OF SHEEPSHEAD BAY, NEW YORK.
BATH-TU B.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,066, dated May 25, 1897.
Application filed July 15, 1896.v Serial No. 599,249. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern;
Be it known that I, MORRIS O. MENGIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sheepshead Bay, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bath-Tubs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in attachments for bath-tubs, whereby the latter may be utilized for the taking of Turkish, steam, and Russian baths; and the object of this invention is to facilitate the converting of a bath-tub so that various kinds of baths may be taken therein.
With these ends in view my invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth, and then specifically design ated bythe claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction and operation in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings,
forming a part of this specification, in which-- Figure l is a central longitudinal section of. a tub fitted with my appliances, and Fig. 2 a cross-section thereof.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A represents a tub, which may be of any desired design andsize, having leading thereto hot and cold water pipes and a steam-pipe, the latter being provided with a nozzle B and the former with spigots C. An extension D is provided for the .tub adapted to t over the upper edge thereof and having depending clips E so arranged as to hold the extension against sidewise displacement. This eXtension is provided with a cover F, which is hinged thereto, so as to be opened and closed as occasion may require, and also a dome G, which extends upward to the desired height and into which the head and shoulders of a person may pass when using the tub, and I prefer to provide the sides of the dome with panes of glass H, so that a person within the tub may have free observation. Depending from the top of the dome is a spray-nozzle I, by means of which a shower may be precipitated upon a person therein, and communication is had between the spigots C and this nozzle by the pipe J, which may be of rubber or other suitable material and adapted to be attached from one spigot to the other for the conveying of water of different temperatures to the nozzle. From this it will be seen that the cover may be swung open and a person gain access to the tub and assume suchaposition that when the cover is again closed the head and shoulders will project into the dome, and in this position either hot or cold water may be run into the tub or caused to iiow through the spray-nozzle, or steam may be admitted, as is well understood in connection with the various kinds of baths. The water accumulating in the tub may be permitted to flow therefrom through the drain-pipe K, which is provided with the usual plug L. When it is desirable to heat the interior of the tub and dome, this may be accomplished by hot air flowing through a suitable register M, connected by means of the pipe N to the register O, formed in the side of the extension D, and as this last-named register is within easy reach of the occupant of the tub the amount of hot air admitted maybe regulated by such person.
In practice I prefer to construct the dom separate from the extension, so that it may be either placed thereon or removed therefrom, and to accomplish this a flange P is secured within the dome, so as to projectbelow its lower edge, and is of such shape as to it the cross-section of the extension and between the head thereof and the inner end of the cover F.
Q is a strip secured to the under side of the cover, so arranged as to support a portion of the dome. When the dome is removedfrom the extension, the space which it previously occupied may be closed by a leaf R, which is hinged at S to the cover, and I also hinge to this leaf aledge T, which serves to more completely close the opening previously occupied by the dome. l
Thus it will be seen that by the use of my improved attachments an ordinary bath-tub may be easily converted into a tub for use in taking Turkish, steam, and Russian baths, and in practice the pipe may be made of sections, so that it can be readily coupled to an ordinary register and with the tub, and, if desired, a special tub may be made adapted to IOO receive the several attachments and so designed as to be portable.
Many advantages gained by my improvementare obvious from a hygienic standpoint.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claini as new and useful is- 1. In a device of the character described, a tub, an extension fitting on the tub, clamps on the extension iitting the tub-rail whereby the dome is held in place, a door fitting in the top of the extension, a dome resting on the top and a leaf for closing the aperture when the doine is removed, a sprinklerin the dome and a flexible connection for conveying water to the sprinkler, as and for the purpose described.
2. An attachment forabath-tub consisting of an extension adapted to be placed upon said tub, a cover hinged to the extension for closing the saine, a dome adapted to be attached to and detached from said extension, said doine having sides of glass, a spray-nozzle arranged within said dome, a leaf R hinged to said cover adapted to close the opening occupied by the dome when the latter is removed, and a register placed in the side of the extension by means of which hot air may be conveyed to the tub, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto afiixed inysignature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MORRIS C. MENGIS.
