B. E. MEAD. REIN HOLDER.
N0. 582,867. Patented May 18, 1897.
WITNESS A TTORNEYJ,
UNITED STATES PATENT CFFI E.
BEVERLY EDWARD MEAD, OF GREENWICH, CONNECTICUT.
RElN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,867, dated May 18, 1897.
Application filed August 1, 1896. Serial No. 601,338. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BEVERLY EDWARD MEAD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Greenwich, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rein- Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts wherever found throughout the several views.
This invention relates to rein-holders for carriages, buggies, and similar vehicles; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is adapted to be connected with the dashboard; and the invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a front view of one corner of a dashboard with my improved rein-holder con nected therewith; Fig. 2, a similar view of the rear thereof; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown at 6 one of the upper corners of a dashboard, which consists of a metal frame, part of which is shown at 7, which is covered by leather in the usual manner, as shown at 8, and in the practice of my invention I provide a rein-holder which consists of a head 9, composed of two separate plates or blocks 10 and 11,each of which is provided centrally thereof with a groove 12, and said blocks are placed on opposite sides or on the front and rear side of the dashboard, preferably at the upper right-hand corner thereof, so that the upper part of the frame will pass through the space formed by said longitudinal grooves 12, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and the said plates or blocks are then bolted or otherwise secured to the corner of the dashboard, as shown at 13, screws or bolts being passed therethrough and through the leather covering of the frame of the dashboard.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a rein-holder having a head comprising two separate plates each being provided centrally with a groove therein, an upwardly-directed extension secured to one of said plates, an arm formed on the upper end of said eX- tension and extending horizontally therefrom, a shoulder also secured near either end of the said latter plate, a shaftj ournaled therebetween, a jaw mounted on said shaft and adapted to engage said arm and a spiral spring also mounted on said shaft and engaging said jaw, all of the said parts being combined substantially as described.
.In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 28th day of July, 1896.
BEVERLY EDWARD MEAD.
