UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT FITZSIMIWIONS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PUNCHlNG-BAG SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,583, dated May 11, 1897.
Application filed November 28, 1896. Serial No. 613,782. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT FITZsIMMoNs, a citizen of the United States 0f America, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punching-Bag Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to that class of VeX- ercisin g apparatus which embodies a support from which is suspended a punching-bag.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and improved punching-bag support which will be especially ornamental and efficient and which will possess advantages in point of convenience, stability, lightness, sounding quality, effectiveness, and general efficiency.
In its general characteristics my improved punching-bag support embodies a central annular platform or ring forming the support proper, projecting peripherally from the edge of which is an ornamental'skeleton frame supported by the corner posts or standards, said peripheral skeleton frame giving the proper extension for the required transverse operating space or width under the support and between the supporting-posts.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the complete apparatus. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view. Fig. t is a detail horizontal sectional view.
Referring to the drawings, A designates an annular support or ring which is centrally arranged in the apparatus and forms a circular surface against the under side of which the suspended punching-bag will strike. This circular support or ring is formed of two corresponding iiat annular plates a a', preferably constructed of wood and arranged horizontally one above the other, with an intervening space, as shown at A. This relative construction and arrangement of the annular platform forms a sounding-board which will have a resonant quality when the punching-bag strikes against the bottom surface formed by the under ring member a.
The sounding-board ringAis braced in the yport A may be connected together bybolts or screws or in any other suitable manner.
Suspended from the central head b of the framework B upon a suitable swivel-joint c by a depending cord c' is the punching-bag O, the relative arrangement of the suspended bag and annular ring support being such that in operation the bag will at all points in its radial position caused by its upward swing strike against the under surface of the ring support.
Projecting peripherally from the centrallyarranged ring support is an outer skeleton or open framework D, embodying four radial arms d, arranged in diametrically opposite pairs, as shown, and respectively extendin g to the outer corners of the apparatus. The arms d are preferably of approximately V shape, the
converging members being preferably formed of tubular metal, and at the outer ends or points are formed eyes or openings d' d', to which the supporting or sustaining devices are fastened. The inner ends of these radial skeleton supporting-arms d are secured by bolts or screws or in any other suitable manner to the outer edge of the annular ring A.
Intermediately between the radial supportingarms CZ are arranged similar approximately V-shaped radially-projecting arms d2, which are comprised in the outer peripheral framework D and may have their converging members formed of tubular metal, the inner ends of said intermediate arms being likewise secured to the outer edge of the ring support A.
At the points of juncture between the radial arms d and d2 I provide V-shaped points or blocks cl3, which may form iian ges by which the members of the outer peripheral open framework D are bolted or secured in respective relative position.
` The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it appertains.
The general open or skeleton construction IOO and arrangement is such that extreme lightness is secured without the sacrifice of stability and strength. The open framework and annular ring shape of the support also obviate darkening of the operating-space under the apparatus, and the construction insures a good light upon the punching-bag. rl'he radial skeleton supporting-arms of the outer framework afford by their extension a proper operating-space between the supporting posts or standards and at the same time cause no darkening of said space, as is the case with the ordinary solid or closed support usually employed in this class of apparatus.
The central circular ring support and the V-shaped radial arms of the outer peripheral frame conjunctively form in their general configuration and arrangement an ornamental star shape or contour to the apparatus, and this ornamental characteristic may be heightened as desired by the employment of il ags mounted at the points of the radial arms, as shown, or in any other suitable manner.
lVhile the ring support is of double construction, as above set forth, to give it a resonant quality, the lightness of the apparatus is preserved in conjunction with this sounding-board feature by reason of the annular or ring shape of the support proper.
An improved punching-bag support constructed in accordance with my invention and improvements is especially adapted for convenient and compact transportation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An improved punching bag support, comprising a circular or annular support proper centrally arranged, and an outer open or skeleton framework projecting peripherally from said central support and embodying radial supporting-arms arranged at regular intervals to resemble a star and adapted to be mounted upon corner-supports, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. An improved punching bag support, comprising an annular support proper centrally arranged, a middle open or skeleton framework mounted within said ring support, from which middle framework the punchingbag is suspended, and an outer open or skeleton framework projecting peripherally from said intermediate ring support and embodying radial supporting-arms arranged at regular intervals to resemble the points of a star and provided at their extremities with eyes to fit corner-supports, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
An improved punching bag support, comprising an annular ring support proper centrally arranged, a middle open or skeleton framework mounted within said ring support and embodying a central head from which extend radial arms orrods, the punching-bag being suspended from said central head, an outer open or skeleton framework embodying approximately V- shaped arms projecting periliherally and radially from said intermediate ring support and supporting posts or standards connected with said radial arms, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
Lf. An improved punchingbag support comprising a ring centrally arranged and embodying two plates arranged one above the other and spaced apart but connected to form a sounding-board, a middle open or skeleton framework mounted within said ring, and an outer or skeleton framework projecting peripherally and embodying radial supportingarms mounted upon the corner posts or standards, substantially as described.
5. An improved punehingbag support, comprising an annular support proper elnbodying two plates horizontally arranged one above the other spaced apart and connected to form a sounding-board, and an outer supporting framework projecting peripherally from said double ring platform and mounted upon posts or standards, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
6. An improved punching bag support comprising a suspended annular support proper centrally arranged, and a series of approximately V-shaped arms projecting peripherally and radially from said central support and forming an outer star-shaped framework connected to the suspending devices, substantially as described.
7. An improved punching bag support comprising a sounding-board formed of two plates spaced apart and connected, and a punching bag suspended therefrom and adapted to swing into contact with the lower plate, substantially as described.
In testimony 'whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT FITZSIMMONS.
