HENRY LANGFELDER, OF JERSEY CITY, NElV JERSEY.v
DAMPING DEVICE FOR MUSIC-BOXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,858, dated May 11, 1897.
Application filed March '7, 1895. Serial No 540,889. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY LANGFELDER, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Damping Device for Music-Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved, simple, and durable damping device for music-boxes having reeds sounded by star-wheels.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully'described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the improvement, and Fig. 2 is a similar view of a modified form of the improvement.
As illustrated in Fig. 1, the star-wheel A, operating on the tongue 13 of the comb, carries on one face a polygonal wheel D, adapted to move with its corners in contact with a spring-arm C bent over, as shown, to engage with its free end the free end of the tongue 13; but when struck by a corner of the wheel D as the star-wheel A rotates the said free end of the arm 0 is moved away from the tongue B to permit the following tooth of the star-wheel A to sound the tongue. Thus normally-that is, when the star-wheel A is at rest-the spring-arm G rests on a flat side of the polygonal wheel D and is in contact at its free end with the tongue B.
As illustrated in Fig. 2, the tongue 13 to be sounded by the teeth of the star-wheel A is damped by the V-shaped end 0 of a springarm C, provided with a projection 0 adapted to drop int-0 a notch formed in the periphery of a wheel D secured on and moving in unison with the star-wheel A Thus the tongue B is damped by the end C as long as the star-wheel is at rest; but as soon as the starwheel is turned by the pin-cylinder then the wheel D, by acting on the projection 0 moves the spring-arm (J' outward and out of engagement with the tongue B I do not limit myself to the spring construction shown, as the same may be considerably varied without deviating from my invention, it being understood, however, that the novelty embodied in my invention is defined in the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure'by Letters Patent A damping device for music-boxes, comprising a spring-damper adapted to engage the tongue and formed with a curved or bent portion, and a wheel operatively connected to the tongue-sounding mechanism and arranged to move the spring-damper, said wheel engaging the damper at the end of the bent portion opposite to that engaging the tongue, said bent portion curving around the wheel, substantially as described.
HENRY LANGFELDER.
