Description

(No Model.)
G. STOERMER. SELF ADJUSTING REGLINING CHAIR.
NQ. 581,888'. i Patented May 4, 1897.
Nrrnn STATES GUSTAV STOERMER, OF ERFURT, GERMANY.
SELF-ADJUSTING RECLlNlNG-CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 581,888, dated May 4, 189?.
Application led April 24, 1896. Serial No. 588,877. (No model.) Patented in Germany December 19, 1893, No. 79,077; in Hungary October 22,1894,N0.1,468, and in Austria. January 21,1895, No. 45/272.
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, GUsTAv STOERMER, residing at Erfurt, in the Kingdom of Prussia, Germany, have invented a new and useful Self-Adjusting Reclining-Chair, (for which l have obtained a patent in Germany, No. 79,0'77,\bearing date of December 19, 1893; in Hungary, No. 1,468, dated October 22, 1894, and inAustria, No. 45/272, dated January 21, 1895,) of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in self-adjusting reclining-chairs, the saine having for its object to provide a chair which by the pressure of the body of the occupant of the chair Will assume the inclined or sitting position and remain in this position after the pressure ceases.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved chair, showing its parts in the position When used as an upright chair. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same, showing its parts in the position they assume when used as a reclining-chair.
Like reference-numerals indicate like parts in the views.
By reference to the gures it Will be seen that 1 represents the side bars of the backsupports, 2 the front-leg supports, 3 the rearleg supports, 4, the seat-supports, and 5 the supplemental supports. The back-supports l are pivoted at the point 6 to the rear-leg supports 3, and the latter are pivoted at the point 7 to the seat-supports 4. The upper ends of the front-leg supports 2 are movably connected with the back-supports l at the same point where the latter are pivoted to the supplemental supports 5. The supplemental supports 5 are also pivoted at 11 to the leg-rests 10 and connect the latter with the back-supports 1. Links 9 are provided to connect the front-leg supports 2 at a point near the center thereof with the rear-leg supports 3.
The leg-rests 10 are provided with arms 12,
`Which are in movable connection with the seat-supports t at the point 8. A flexible back fabric upon Which the seat rests connects the upper end of the back-supports 1 with the seat-supports 4f.
By this construction it will be seen that if pressure is applied to the rear part of the seat, Fig. 1, and the back of the body leaned against the back-supports 1 the latter Will turn on their pivots 6 and reach an inclined position. Thereby the rear and front leg supports 3 and 2, respectively, being drawn toward each other, reach a substantially upright position and stretch out the back fabric. The seat is thereby raised in horizontal line with the leg-rest 10, which leg-rest by means of the supplemental supports 5 `and the short arms 12 is carried to and held in a position in alinement With the seat. All the parts of the device Will thus assume a position, like that shown in Fig. 2, in the form of a reclining-chair and remain in said position. If in this position pressure be applied to the seat-supports 4 at the point 8, so as to lift the back-supports in the upright position, the front and rear leg supports 2 and 3, respectively, Will be drawn away from each other, the leg-rest drawn down, and the iiexible back is folded and laid between the backsupports 1. All the parts of the device will now assume a position like that shown in Fig. 1, so as to be used as an upright chair and remain in said position. v
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A self-adjusting reclining-chair comprising supports in pivotal connection with said backsupports, links pivotally connecting the front and rear leg supports, a seat pivoted to the rear-leg support, a flexible back fabric secured to the seat and back supports, a legrest pivoted to the seat and a pair of supplemental supports in pivotal connection With the back-supports and leg-rest. v
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib ing Witnesses.
